Loughborough Students 35 – Blaydon 7

Blaydon had little reward for their efforts at the Abbey Road ground, eventually going down by a score remarkably similar to last seasons 36-8 reversal in the same fixture.

Despite an early set-back they were soon on level terms, fell away in the periods before and after the break, but dominated in the final quarter only to be repeatedly on the wrong side of the referee’s whistle in the scrums.

Blaydon knocked on from the kick-off and were caught napping when man-of -the-match Will Edwards, the Loughborough scrum-half scythed through their defence and then added the conversion.

On 10 minutes however a penalty to the corner saw flanker Matthew Jenkinson touch down from the line-out drive and Andrew Baggett added the extras to level the scores.

Possession was then shared equally for a time but Blaydon paid the price for too often handing theirs back to the opposition for winger Josh Linney to twice race in for excellent tries.

An Edwards conversion and a penalty made it 22-7 to the home side at the interval but with the slope in their favour Blaydon had hopes for optimism. Disappointingly they failed to take advantage and allowed the students other winger Yiannis Loizias to break through the centre for a 4th try, again converted by Edwards who along with Tom James added 2 more penalties to complete the scoring.

Despite the set-backs Blaydon had all the territory in the final 20 minutes, often pressing for the line through the forwards but time and time again were penalised at attacking scrums and could make little progress.

Blaydon 13 – Wharfedale 43

As the programme notes reminded us matches between these two clubs are generally close affairs, but sadly for Blaydon, yesterdays encounter was very much the exception to the rule with the visitors running away with it.

The Wharfedale backs proved far to elusive, breaking tackles at will to release runners, particularly Dan Tai Sen Choy on the left wing who created havoc throughout and could easily have doubled his brace of tries.

Blaydon were 3 tries adrift after just 26 minutes but then at last got their act together and applied some pressure in the visitors 22. A promising attack was halted by a high tackle and from the penalty to the corner Gavin Jones gathered in and Tom Gulland was driven over. Andrew Baggett landed the conversion and then a penalty on the stroke of half-time to add to another earlier effort and make it 13-17 at the break – all set then for a second half revival – but it was not to be.

Wharfedale simply carried on from where they had left off in the opening quarter and in what rapidly became a rout ran in 4 more tries without reply against a creaking defence. Former Blaydon fly-half Jamie Guy was on target with 4 conversions but his 14th minute failure indirectly led to the opening score when the home side failed to secure the restart and Choy ran it back at them at great speed. Centre Cameron Hudson touched down from a chip ahead and then Choy was in again on the end of a flowing movement, albeit with the benefit of a fortuitous bounce.

The second half one-way traffic brought simple scores for Hudson, Huw Morgan, Maxime Labasse and then finally an effort that summed it all up when a Wharfedale centre slipped his marker on half-way and released replacement James Doherty who showed a clean pair of heels to some demoralised defenders.

Saturday 19th Sept. Northern Panthers (IIIs) 36, Blaydon Bricks 29

Our second league outing was a great spectacle for junior rugby, entertained a decent crowd and was played on the very large first team pitch, on a very warm sunny day. It was one of the best displays by a Bricks side I’ve seen for some time, who never gave up to the end and it ended in a narrow defeat, as the Bricks ran out of bodies and tired and were beaten by a well drilled very large Northern Panther’s squad, with plenty of fresh legs, Northern won’t loose many games this season and nor should the Bricks if they continue to play this way.

On a week where we had multiple cry offs for all sorts of reasons, to 2 players just going missing on the day, our prop (Craig stepped up and did a great job as prop) and our full back, (who woke up at halftime after a night on the town…dipstick) so Hopey moved there and Liam came into scrum half. Our cause was not helped when we lost Coatsy our flyhalf, about 20 mins in, after a try saving tackle resulted in a damaged arm, fortunately not broken and then we lost Adam our 2nd row about 10 mins into the 2nd half with a broken thumb, with a lack of subs we had numerous walking wounded and everybody was out on their feet, by the end.

True to say everyone played their part, they was no bad performances, so we are going to skip the usual wide scale pops at our team, but Keith and Harry’s handling (dropped 2 each) gets a special mention, so highs:

• Hits and hard yards made by Harry, Keith and Adam
• Big lad was all round the park
• Craig played well at prop, our scrum was strong
• Good to have Stu back making the hits
• What a 2nd row combination Strachs and Windy made :-)
• Hopey’s spiralling kicks – he asked me to mention them….
• Divers and Chester both in defence and making yards
• Liam played well at scrum half
• Steve’s second game resulted in a good score and some good defence.
• Damien, Ian and Paul made the rest of the tackles
Great all round team display and the return leg to come at Blaydon, you can bet the return fixture in a few weeks will be played on a much smaller pitch and it will be very well watered….. to slow them down.

Rugby World Cup opening ceremony starts at 6-45 on Friday 18th Sept. followed by the England Fiji Game at 8pm, the club is open to non members, as our main bars are public bars, everyone welcome.

Rugby World Cup Update:

This is the first of a series of messages to keep you informed of activities and events happening at Blaydon Rugby Club during the biggest rugby event to hit our region for many years.

Every match will be shown in the clubhouse – come and enjoy the games and the banter in the rugby soaked atmosphere of Blaydon RFC in the company of our panel of resident experts. The England games (except v Wales), quarter and semi finals and the Final will be shown upstairs on the large HD projector screen and in the members room which has 2 large screen TVs. Our apologies we will not be screening the Wales game in the main room, we have a long term committed function we are unable to postpone, so this one England game will only be shown in members lounge.

In addition, for every England game (except the Wales match) we will also be giving you the opportunity of ordering a tasty World Cup themed meal – based on whoever England’s opponents are. Those ordering food by Wednesday will have a reserved seat to enjoy their food and ensure you get a good view of the match.

So – for the opening match against Fiji this Friday we are offering ‘Fijian Red Pork and Pineapple Curry with Rice’ for only £5.95. To order your food please contact Sharon (our caterer) by 9.00am Wednesday morning, to guarantee availability, otherwise it’s first come first served on the night. She can be reached either on 07748 605549 or by e mail to amowcatering@hotmail.com . You can also either see her in or call the clubhouse.

This pattern of ordering food will be repeated every time so get your orders in for an Aussie Barbeque and a Uruguayan meaty treat (probably an Asado and / or Choripan) as well by 9.00am on the Wednesday before each match.

Also coming up…
11th October – an afternoon and evening full of World Cup action on the screens plus a family fun afternoon with special World Cup prizes for the kids.
31st October – THE FINAL! – come and celebrate the big finale live on the big screen followed by a ‘spooktacular’ fancy dress Halloween Party.

ALL WELCOME! COME ON ENGLAND!
