Saturday 17th Oct. – Winlaton Saxons 17, Blaydon Bricks 17

A valiant effort from the Bricks team on the day, who again just ran out of bodies, didn’t have the subs to take off the walking wounded and/or inject fresh legs when needed. Winlaton went from struggling to run a side, to come up with a squad of around 23, such is the rivalry between the two clubs, everyone turned out to look to beat the Bricks.

Winlaton Photos: Some very good photos posted Paul Hopps, look out for Anth taking down Rodders, shame he didnt get the tackle by Harry.   http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/winlatonvulcans/photos/vulcans-v-blaydon-17-10-2015-623653.html

Blaydon Photos: sorry omly circa 40,  got too wrapped up in the game to game, again. We really need a photographer for the Bricks (camera available to use)  https://www.flickr.com/photos/26086313%40N08/collections/

It was a typical game game of 2 halves, with Winlaton playing up the hill first, conceding 3 trys and attacking the second half down the hill. Winlaton used rolling subs well to rest some of their big men and bring them back in the later stages of the second half, down the hill, when the Bricks were trying to hold onto the lead.

It could and should have been very different:
• if the referee had been better placed he would have seen Harry score in the corner coming off the back of a ruck, but he can only give what he can see
• for a second key game we lost our flyhalf Coatsey, at the time our back division were running great lines and breaking the gain line at will. Thacks stepped in and did a sterling job, as ever, h would be the first to admit, he doesn’t have the pace that Coatsey has to create an attack from anywhere.
• we had a couple of situations where simple hands would have worked the overlaps, but either the ball was kicked, miss passes lost the overlap or the ball was dropped on the day
• we had key cry offs late on, which left us short of players
The result was we dropped points in this league game and will have been knocked off the top of the league by Northern Panthers.

The Saxons game plan was predictable, but effective, catch and drive from the line out and a rolling maul which they used to make good yards, Blaydon defence was resolute especially around the try line and stopped wave after wave of attack. Winlaton backs were nullified by the Bricks back’s defence and they made little yards with ball in hand.

So another close game with the Saxons, who pressurised us until the final whistle, in the end it was a draw, not loss, but it’s lost points in the league title race.

Our injury list grew with injuries to Coatsey and Thacks, both out now, to add to already sizable list of; Adam, Cliff, Finnas, Horse, Joe, Richard, Savs, Windy and GB and Ryan working most Saturdays now, means we are down to minimum numbers to still maintain our fixtures.

Next weekend sees us come up against Northern Panthers at Crowtrees, who narrowly beat us earlier in the season, it will be another tuff game and we are going to need bodies, as last time they had a squad of about 25 players.

Blaydon 33 – Plymouth Albion 38

An entertaining game with lots of tries and bonus points all round but for all their efforts Blaydon are still looking for another win since the opening day of the season.

Back-rower Jason Smithson did his best with a hat-trick of tries, two from driving line-outs plus a neat little dummy,  but his side still trailed for most of the game and when the late rally arrived the game had already gone.

Tom Grimes, in his second appearance back from serious injury, put Blaydon ahead for the only time when he finished off a smart move initiated by a break from Nathan Bailey, only for Plymouth to quickly regain control.

Billy Searle, a replacement scrum-half on the bench, found himself promoted when the fly-half was injured in the warm-up and was a constant threat, twice opening up the Blaydon defence to run in tries.

Tom Bedford, a former Newcastle Falcon, and Nile Dacres added further scores before the break but Smithson meanwhile had twice done the business for Blaydon and at the interval it was 21-28 and everything to play for.

Ethan Ford, with the benefit of what most thought was a forward pass, crossed for a 5th Plymouth score but home skipper Keith Laughlin barged over from a close range ruck, Brett Connon landing an excellent 4th conversion, and going into the closing stages Blaydon were 7 points adrift at 28-35.

Tom Putt was equally proficient with the boot for the visitors and added a penalty to his 5 conversions but Smithson had the final word with his 5th try of the season to guarantee Blaydon a second bonus point.

Sat. 10th October – Blaydon Bricks 32, Chester-le-Street IIs 5

Hats off to Chester-le-Street (ClS) who rang up and offered to come along with 12 players to keep the game on Saturday, we had 3 subs, so numbers were evened out and a good game was had by all. Great to see a local side increasing the number of teams, it’s a long time since ClS ran two teams and good chance we will meet again later in the season in the Durham 4th Team Shield. We wish them every success in maintaining their 2nd Team.

The Bricks side had a bit of an usual look about it, we had loads players at the Scotland v Samoa or generally unavailable; our thanks to:

• Bum Bum returning to Bricks shirt firt time this season
• Killer’s guesting, he needed some exercise
• Big thank you to Greg and Andy from Winlaton IIs who played for ClS
• Damien and Thacks for playing for ClS
• Jason Leng for going for gear after coming to the club to watch TV
• Divers and Damien for playing in the forwards
• and :-( to Marty and Anth, who just did not show on the day….. won’t be forgotten.
• Less so, but needs a mention, Chester who cried off with a sniffle

Scorer’s
Trys; Paul, Another, Ryan, Lowsey, Stu B and Strachs
Conv; Phil 1, Matt less than 1

High and Lows:

• This game had a juggling theme to it, with multiple offenders; Keith (naturally) Phil with the line in front of him, Damien, Strachs, Paul, Bum Bum and Keith again, not to be outdone.
• Windy forgot he was running the line, multiple times, we’re going to have to find an alternate roll, post his retirement
• Phil tackled again, dropped licked a successful conversion after watching Matt miss 5 and then got confused with our change to blue shirts and passed to ClS
• Paul drops a pass from Lowsey, not his fault really, who ever would have thought he would pass it anyway
• Lowsey going to ground, been watching too much rugby in TV and flips the ball up, to ClS player.
• Good yards from Killer, Bum Bum, Ryan, Matt and Lowsey
• Thacks goes on for CLS so they had a scrum half, takes responsibility for the re-start, sorry ClS it was a poor kick, he should do better and to be fair usually does.
• Stu and Divers tackled all sorts. Mostly opposition.
• John Hood made his debut for the Bricks after going missing before half time last week

Game played in good spirits, side line entertained and a good try scored by ClS backs. Next week we’re back to league rugby with an away fixture against Winlaton IIs, so we’ll see Greg and Andy again this weekend,.

Richmond 19 – Blaydon 10

Despite again finishing on the wrong side of the score-line Blaydon showed great improvement, leading at half-time by 10 points to nil and they had the chances to finish it off in the second period.

Brett Connon got them off to a perfect start with a 2nd minute penalty when the home side strayed offside in front of their posts, and increased pressure soon resulted in a try. A penalty to the corner and good possession at the line-out was turned into a rolling maul and a trademark score in the corner for prop forward Sam White.

The lead was held to the interval although Richmond were guilty of failing to convert a simple penalty opportunity.

Blaydon were just as remiss early in the second period when they failed to capitalise on another line-out drive that should have brought reward.

Man-of -the-match Andy Hall, a replacement fly-half, pulled back 3 points with a penalty and then poor tackling by Blaydon let in Richmond flanker Adam Lee who escaped down the wing for a try in the corner.

Hall failed with the conversion attempt but succeeded with a ‘monster’ penalty from half-way, and rubbed salt into Blaydon’s wounds with a solo effort try after avoiding more poor tackles, and then another late penalty.

Blaydon still had time for a catch and drive but failed again and the game was gone and an encouraging performance had brought no reward.

Friday night rugby a great success – Bricks 15, Morpeth Stags 10

With Saturday designated a RWC weekend we were asked to avoid fixtures on Saturday 3rd October to support the competition, which we did and Morpeth came up with the idea of playing on the Friday night, hats off to them, what a great suggestion. I sent out the text on previous Sunday to see what sort of team we would get out and, to my surprise, just about every one of the squad came back available, it was like putting a text out for a cup match…. we had 10 subs, even with late cry offs

It was a perfect night for rugby, we had a good crowd to watch and they were entertained by a cracking game from two balanced sides, both with good squads and full commitment from all players to the game, it was close and, in reality a draw would have been a fairer result given the performances from both sides, well done to Morpeth Stags, they won’t lose many league games this season with that squad.
.
We had a number of people making a first appearance of the season:
• Mark Todd home from sea played well, tackling, lineout and at second row and back row, he missed out on his Brick’s Black shirt (5 appearances in a season) last season and wants to achieve it this year.
• Rob Pyle whose back from injury from last season and couldn’t play for the Development on Saturday, turned out (another one who just missed out on his shirt last season and year before) and we moved him from normally playing in the backs, into the backrow where he was yellow carded for tackling too quickly….
• Davy Lowes (Lowsey) made a come back from his retirement from rugby, to focus on playing football, playing in the centre in the 2nd half
• Finnas and Ryan, who have been working Saturdays were both available, giving us a strong front row presence, as GB was available as well.
• Gerry even made himself available, another one working every Saturday
• We have a new playing member, John, who had not played since playing for his regiment a few years ago, he was to start 2nd half, I named the team, we took the pitch and realised we had 14 men, (he had been called away) I must pay better attention and improve my counting..
.
Highs & Lows:
• We had a complete second set of backs and we changed the whole back division at half time, Craig going back on when we notice we only had 14 men on the pitch.
• This was 2 experienced sides with loads of talent and some good young players with pace, difficult to single out individual performances, they were so many good ones, let’s mention the young (Colt) Morpeth 15, he used the ball kicked to him well, with some great running lines and bags of pace.
• Divers took his two scores well, but we still haven’t seen the jugs from his hat trick, from a couple of games ago.
• Turnover ball to Morpeth with us attacking in their 22, they kicked ahead and foot race with Phil (60+) and Thacks (no-where near 60, so we’re told) to secure the ball before Morpeth get to it, Phil wins the foot race, it was mentioned to Thacks consistently after game, but he insists he let Phil get to the ball first and stood ready for the off load, it would have been a forward pass, in everyone else’s view.
• Finnas and Ryan trying to persuade the Bricks to train on a Thursday, they were out of breath due to this being their first game, but they wasted a lot more trying to persuade likes of Keith to train….
Next weekend was designated a RWC weekend with a break in league fixtures, but given the result on Saturday, we will get a game and still be in the bar to talk about what could have been, if England had got through the Pool round.

Blaydon 22 – Hartpury College 28

In the end it was a 4th consecutive defeat for Blaydon but going into the closing minutes there were only 3 points between the sides and it could have gone either way. Disappointingly  a number of handling errors let them down, the impetus was lost, and Gareth Thompson the Hartpury full-back clinched the result with a last minute penalty.

It was Thompson who opened the scoring with an early penalty before Jim Stephenson went over from a short scrum. Brett Connon responded with a penalty when the visitors collapsed a scrum but a scrum at the other end resulted in Blaydon conceding a second try when they were pushed off their own ball.

Replacement hooker David Nelson made an immediate impact when he broke in style from half-way to release the winger and was then on hand to stretch over and secure the try.

At the break it was 8-15 but Blaydon soon drew level with the first of a brace of indentical scores by flanker Jason Smithson. The visitors collapsed yet another scrum and from the penalty to the corner the Blaydon pack marched on at some speed for Smithson to benefit and Connon to convert.

Hartpury restored their advantage with a slick effort from winger Elliott Creed but back came Blaydon with the tried and trusted rolling maul. Smithson and Connon again combined to take it to 22-25, and it was anybody’s game.

But all to no avail, Thompson put it beyond doubt and Blaydon had to make do with a losing bonus point.
