Current and ex Blaydon involved in action for the Falcons over recent weeks

Congratulations to the current and ex Blaydon players who have been involved in action for the Falcons over recent weeks. The victorious Falcons side from the first round of the Singha Premiership 7s featured ex Blaydon flanker Scott Riddell as well as current D/R players Ruaridh Dawson and Callum Chick, who captained the side. Well done too to current scrum half Rhodri Adamson who was drafted in for the finals the following week at the Stoop.

Also, huge congratulations to the current and ex Blaydon players who were involved in the Falcons 27-7 victory over Georgia last week. The Falcons producing some excellent Rugby to surprise the Georgians as they warm up for the World Cup. Ex Blaydon players Craig Willis, Tom Catterick, Mark Wilson and  Will Welch were instrumental in the win whilst current players Andrew Foster, Brett Connon and Ruaridh Dawson all contributed well from the bench.

Blaydon start their league campaign with a good win – Blaydon 29, Blackheath 16

The scoreboard showed Blaydon to be 7-16 down at the break after a half in which the visitors, with the benefit of the referees whistle, held an advantage at scrum and line-out and were overall deserving of their lead.

But by the end however the Blackheath scrum was in complete disarray and in an amazing turnaround Blaydon had ran in 22 points unanswered and were in complete control

“We were so confident throughout, even at half-time. We gave too many penalties away but put some good stuff together and felt if we cut the penalties out in the second half and kept hold of the ball for a few phases we could squeeze them out” said Director of rugby Micky Ward.

Visiting fly-half Fred Gabbitass landed 2 early penalties but Blaydon grabbed the opening try on 23 minutes. A Sean English burst into the 22 had come to naught but when Jason Smithson followed suit soon after scrum-half Rhodri Adamson nipped in to score and Andrew Baggett added the points.

In a Blackheath counter attack the Blaydon defence appeared to stand off expecting a ‘foot in touch flag’ whilst Devin Montgomery ran on to send in Jack Walsh. Gabbittass added the points and then another penalty before the break but that was to be it for the visitors.

On 54 minutes Blaydon lost an attacklng line-out, were almost over but lost possession from another, but Keith Laughlin gathered in the clearance for winger James Cooney to scoot through in fine style.

Bagget added the conversion but his penalty attempt to give Blaydon the lead drifted well wide. Another effort disappointingly rebounded from an upright and this time when Blackheath scrambled it clear Tom Small ran it straight back at them to make it 19-16.

Baggett’s conversion and then a penalty when Blackheath collapsed a scrum in front of their posts put the visitors out of sight, and No8 Gavin Jones put the icing on the cake with a last minute bonus point try from a rolling maul.

Saturday 5th Sept. South Shields 17, Blaydon Bricks 29

Our opening game of the season was away to South Shields (ex South Tyneside College) with a new look, new changing rooms, new bar and some of the best after game food we have seen since the days of Durham Constabulary, with roast tatties, mash spuds, Yorkshire pudding with sausages, thick gravy and pizza. Good luck to South Shields in their new era, whose’s set up is much better this season.
Our thanks to Rob from South Shields, also Steve and Greg from Winlaton who helped out as the Bricks were very short on forwards on the day. Also thanks to Damien and Goggle for playing on the forwards following injuries. Final player thanks goes to Joe Melia who came a long and played the first half for us as he returns from injury.

On the game, it was a typical first game performance, it was not a good performance. The first gathering of the Bricks for the season was in the bar before the game, there was a check on training performed and Keith did not disappoint, his update was he’d been watching sport on the TV……

So let’s do a couple of headlines, just so there is a little bit of rugby in the match report and let’s move on to next week, quickly, highs and lows:

• Damien took a good ball and broke through making good yards
• SS had no answer to Joe going blind, passing to Divers who out in Damien and then Greg, so guess what we stopped doing that
• Hopey (scrum half) was getting himself excited and running across the pitch to take the ball to players, bringing SS defence with him, pass the ball, that’s what scrum halves do…..
• Matt, Joe and Divers making good yards
• Chester complaining, he’s becoming the apprentice Mr Grumpy for being penalised for holding onto the ball, Ref was right.
• Anthony making tackles
• Phil Rayson making a tackle
• I didn’t see Keith drop the ball, that does mean it didn’t happen….
• Rob from SS played a greta game against his club and ran in from 20 yards to score.

Scorers:
Try’s; Damien, Greg Holder, Rob (SS) Goggle, Divers
Conv: Joe 1, Matt 1

Pre-season about to step up a gear and time to announce the new additions for 2015/16 Season

This week has seen the Blaydon players have a nice week away from the rugby club. Most the lads have been training very hard for the last four weeks and this was a chance to recharge their batteries, as the main rugby part of pre-season will be getting under way next Tuesday the 4th to get the lads ready for our build up to Blackheath on the 5th September. I’m sure are lads will be chomping at the bit.

.

Tuesday will give us a chance to see all the lads back in training. Along with the Blaydon regulars we have acquired a few more players.
In the front row we have Sam White a very experienced prop that joins us from Tynedale.

Alex Ruff a former Newcastle Thunder winger.

Rob Rekis, winger England Counties U20’s, Rob joined Blaydon late last season but with other rugby commitments never had a chance to run in the first team.

Frazer Wilson and Tom Grimes are returning from injuries.

James Oritt, James Cooney, Jack Beckwith and Elliot Beattie all coming through from the colts.

.
We also have our regular crop of dual registered players from Newcastle.

We have Brett Connon a young fly half who did an outstanding job at Tynedale last season.

Callum Chick a No8 who is the current England U18’s captain.

Ruaridh Dawson a Young quick Scrum half who has played his entire rugby career at Blaydon.

.

This years squad has a much more competitive feel to it, when you have players such as of Tom Small and Tom Bramwel or Trevor Davison and Andrew Foster competing for a place this is when selection becomes an interesting debate. With this in mind I can’t wait for 15th August when we have our first run out against Currie.

Our first home fixture this season is against Ayr in our annual fixture the kick off will be at 2.30.

Blaydon Players representing England sides over the summer

The county season has come to a close and most of our lads will now eventually get a much-needed rest, this however is not the case for everybody. The best performers from the county championship are picked to make up an England Counties squad; this squad will travel to Romania for a two game tour.

Once again Blaydon have a huge contingent on the plane, we’ll not only have Gavin jones and Chris Wearmouth in the squad but Harry Bate who is unfortunately moving away from the club this summer, we’re also proud to have Blaydon captain Keith Laughlin captain of the tour.

All four lads fully deserve their selection

Another positive for the club is dual registered second row Will Witty has been selected to start in the first England U20’s game of the world championship against Japan

I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them all the best.

Mark Wilson in the England Squad to play Barbarians – Sunday 31st May

Congratulations to Mark, this is well deserved after a great season in Falcons back row.

Mark’s club career is; Kendal, Blaydon and then the Falcons.

This  will give great inspiration to many young players at Blaydon and shows when you add commitment, dedication and drive on top of natural ability, just what you can achieve.

Enjoy the start of your England career.
