Thanks to Houghton who came through with 12 players just to get a game and thanks to Ian, Windy, Keith, Strachs and few other for playing for Houghton. Also great news that lad who got hurt only had muscle injury, hope he gets back on the pitch soon. Highs and Lows

  • Blaydon forwards were well on top and made great yards
  • Good running from Matt, Savs, Goggle and Liam in the backs
  • Short balls to Matt were making big yards
  • Harry on break, good offload to Goggle and then Ryan who runs in the try
  • Goggle takes a high ball and makes a good break, offload to Horse who got stripped of the ball
  • High ball, Stu calls majestically and then Oops, think he was using Keith’s hands
  • Stu redeems himself when he follows up a penalty kick and steals the ball which is whipped out wide for try
  • Second half Keith and Windy are sent to play for Houghton for sarcasms in the changing room before the game, revenge is sweet.
  • Kick off ball between Horse and Ryan, who just looked at each other ‘which way did it go!’
  • Near the end of the game, stoppage near the sideline and Phil Rayson takes a load of stick for still being clean
  • Keith bowls Horse over by rolling Adam into him, so funny
  • Windy gets thrown out of the line out and dumped, well he was on the opposition

Ryton IIIs 10, Blaydon Bricks 41

Saturday 17th January – Ryton IIIs 10, Blaydon Bricks 41

Scorers Trys; Matt Goodhall, Divers 2, Finnas, Knoxy, Sam

Conv; Sam 3

With Gosforth not able to field a side we picked up a fixture against Ryton at short notice and set off with only 17 players available. Our 3s had no game but in the knowledge that Ryton had 3 games on the day, we went with a true Bricks side. We had two newcomers playing they first game;

Sam at flyhalf, who we found behind the bar at the club, having stopped playing football recently, who showed really good potential.
Neil who just walked in to the club on Thursday night looking to play social rugby at second row, which was a great help on the day and another player for the future. Our thanks to Paul Winter who played for Ryton to keep the game as contested scrums
Highs and Lows and no apology for abit of a pick on Keith day, but he made it so easy:

  • Blaydon forwards were well on top and the backs running just mesmerised the Ryton defence, game was cut short by about 10 mins and Ryton were running out of players
  • Keith goes down on the ball and rumour has is the knock on was from his belly
  • Matt G had a field day running at the Ryton backs who didn’t seem to want to tackle him at speed, he went blind for the first score and ran in from 30 yards
  • Sam did well and orchestrated things in the backs, short ball to Divers and he went through the middle to score
  • Matt G picked up a ball just outside of our 22 and took off through the middle of the opposition, passed to Keith, well that was the end of that.
  • Knoxy made a number of good breaks from the kick off (and Ryton Continued to kick it to him) off loaded to Sam and then to Divers for his second tray.
  • Next kick off, same combination Knoxy sets off, passes to Sam, who just about gets his head knocked off with a high tackle.
  • Keith steals a ball sets off down the side line, great 20 yd break and…. drops it right in front of me.
  • Then a surreal moment, Ref signals Ryton 22 drop out, our forwards line up for a scrum on the 22 (no clue why) Ryton take teh 22 and only one there, again right in front of me is Damien, who goes up for the high ball, gets it completely wrong and throws it forward into the arms of the Ryton winger, who sets off.
  • chester made some good breaks through the middle
  • Same players different combination; Sam, Divers and Knoxy scores
  • Sam chips just inside our half, chases and collects to score.
  • Matt G sets off, off loads to Keith who is then stripped by the smallest guy on the park.
  • Keith then loses one against the head, his Paul hooked it from under his nose.
  • Matt G sets off another 50yds run and is took down and winded by the same small lad who stripped Keith.
  • Last try was again a blindside move from a ruck, which thank fully missed out keith (who insists he as involved) to Damien to take it in the corner.

Next week is the home game against Northern (who turned us over heavily in the first fixture) who are second in the league, with Bricks in top spot. http://northumberlandrugbyunion.com/clubs/county-leagues/river-blyth-league

Blaydon 31 – Backheath 38

In one of the most remarkable recoveries seen at the Crow Trees ground Blaydon came back from a 12-38 deficit midway through the second half to be within inches of pulling off what would have been a fantastic victory.

For 20 minutes they took total control in the forwards, pushing Blackheath off their own scrum ball, marching them backwards under the posts causing a yellow card to be issued and 5 times were over the visitors line.

Unfortunately 2 of them were not awarded and in the end Blaydon had to be content with a brace of bonus points – but what an effort!

Against the run of play they had taken the lead from their first foray over half-way in the 14th minute when Craig Willis, in his first game after a long lay-off through injury, crossed in the corner after an excellent break by Tom Bramwell.

The Blackheath backs however were having a field day against a splintered defence, breaking through tackles at will to run in 3 tries in a 6 minute blitz. Mike Canty (2) and Sam Eydmann did the damage and at the break it was 5-24.

Replacement centre Toby Bain pulled one back just after the restart when chasing his own chip over a defender, but when Tom Bason and Dave Allen had crashed over for Blackheath tries number 4 and 5 it looked all over.

But suddenly Blaydon were transformed and pride was fully restored through the efforts of the forwards. Blackheath who had been coasting were now in disarray and had no answer when Matt Hall went over with a head of steam.

Willis was on hand to grab his second and near the end No8 Gavin Jones broke from a scum to level the try scoring at 5 a-piece.

A remarkable finish but it could have even been better.

Coventry 34 – Blaydon 15

Coventry’s 13 match winning run since losing at Blaydon in September was comfortably extended with a tremendous second half performance that gave the visitors little chance of ‘doing the double’.

A crowd of 1938, the best of the season at the Butts Park Arena, were stunned into silence however in the 1st minute when the Blaydon forwards with some excellent inter-passing stormed into the home 22 for Chris Wearmouth to touch down for a sensational try.

Coventry recovered well and soon hit back for wingers Will Hurrell and Dom Lespierre to combine in a smart move finished off by the latter and converted by fly-half Matt Jones.
Lespierre and Jones struck again on 26 minutes but by the interval Blaydon had regained the lead. A barnstorming run by Tom Bramwell saw the centre go clear but unluckily crash into an upright when touching down. Andrew Baggett landed the conversion and in the final minute of the half added a penalty to make it 14-15 to the visitors.

The Blaydon defence showed great resilience in the 2nd period but promotion seeking Coventry had much the better of the exchanges and with 2 more tries went on to clinch victory.

Hurrell, who was a constant threat, made the initial break for a fine effort by man of the match Sam Pailor, the flanker then adding a second with a powerful burst from 25 metres.

Jones converted both efforts and was also on target with a brace penalties to take his personal tally to 14 points.

Blaydon 5 – Ealing Trailfinders 31

The Ealing juggernaut stormed into the new year with another comfortable 5 pointer and in the second half in particular appeared to score at will. Their pacey backs repeatedly broke tackles to put the home defence in retreat with centre Andrew Reay a constant threat with his sniping runs.

Up front it was a different story however as the Blaydon pack were more than a match for their counterparts and had good claims for a penalty try early on when Ealing twice pulled down a 5 metre scrum and incurred a yellow card.

Reay it was who scored the opener when completing a flowing move, and by the interval flanker Arthur Ellis had danced through for number two.

On 55 minutes Reay was in again but this time Blaydon quickly responded through Gavin Jones from a rolling maul. Just as quickly however Ealing were back down the other end for replacement Luke Daniels to score the bonus try.

Blaydon rallied again and twice put kickable penalties to the corner only to lose the line-out, and fittingly the visitors had the last word.

Another lightning raid from their own half was completed in style by Sam Wardingley, who had provided the pass for both the Reay efforts, and fly-half Ben Ward put over his third conversion.

Tynedale 17 – Blaydon 27

There was little festive cheer for Tynedale in this derby clash, going down by 4 tries to 2 and rarely looking capable of avoiding a 6th consecutive defeat. For Blaydon it was sweet revenge for an early season reversal in the home fixture and a 5 point win to end their own rocky spell.
A crowd in excess of 500 saw the visitors use their wind advantage to run-up a 15-3 lead in the first half and then add two more tries into the elements to virtually seal the result early in the second period.

After 10 minutes of probing by both sides Blaydon No8 Gavin Jones stormed into the 22 to break the deadlock. Rhodri Adamson was put clear only to be pulled down inches short but possession was regained and centre Toby Bain crossed in the corner.

On 18 minutes Adamson was again the initiator, Tom Bramwell taking it on to send in Tom Jeffery for a second score. This time Andrew Baggett landed the conversion followed by a penalty success for both he and Tynedale full-back Brett Connon but by the interval Blaydon were down to 14, Tom Grimes being yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on.

Despite the advantage in numbers and wind Tynedale fell further behind soon after the restart when Blaydon moved it quickly through the hands for Baggett to put Jeffrey clear for the wingers 2nd try.

Worse was to follow when their replacement forward Adam King followed Grimes into the bin and Blaydon ran in a 4th try. Baggett was again involved, moving it on to Chris Wearmouth, the big lock storming over with a couple of defenders hanging on.

The Baggett conversion ended the Blaydon scoring and director of rugby Micky Ward declared himself to be ‘chuffed to bits’, saying “We needed to get a win before Christmas” adding ” The really pleasing thing for me was that some of the tries we scored weren’t just through the forwards, we were throwing the ball around and threatening from all positions”.

Tynedale however almost had the last word, scoring 2 tries to greatly reduce the deficit. At three rolling mauls in quick succession they had Blaydon in full retreat, one of them resulting in a penalty try and another sin-binning for the visitors.

Ironically for Blaydon when they finally broke free of the pounding and gained 30 metres from their own drive they were robbed of the ball (not for the first time) and Tynedale raced clear to record a fine effort though flanker Matthews Charters.

A philosophical chairman of rugby John Shotton said afterwards “We battled on but overall I thought we were poor today, our confidence is down and Blaydon deserved to win”.
