First Half of the Season Review

This report is produced from match reports, match return sheets and information from other club websites.

Playing record is as follows: P13 W9 L4 Pts 430 Against 309

According to the records 32 players have represented the First Team so far this season with 25 having scored tries with 1 penalty try adding to this total. Currently Harry Borthwick with 10 tries is the leading scorer followed by Dan Marshall with 9. In total we have scored 62 tries, emphasizing our open style of play and this figure is responsible for 75% of our points total.

The conversion rate from the four kickers used is 62% and the leading scorer currently is Ryan Foreman who despite missing games through injury totals 62 points including 21 conversions, 3 tries and 6 penalties.

Whilst we have lost 4 games our points total is enhanced by 13 bonus points, the highest in the league and we have recorded a bonus point in every game of the season.

The first half of the season has gone well, training is well attended and enthusiastically undertaken. Thanks should be given to all who give up their time midweek and on Saturdays to assist in this direction. January will start with the main objective being promotion and therefore it will be necessary to strive harder to achieve this aim.

Finally many thanks to our supporters particularly those who travel on our away trips, the committee for the running of the club, Paul Strachan for, along with his wife Dawn all the work on refurbishments and ground improvements and Sharon and Andy for all their assistance, not forgetting of course the Car Booters. Carlisle 26, Blaydon 31

CARLISLE 26 – 31 BLAYDON
Blaydon came away from Cumbria with a hard-earned victory over a home side who fought constantly and hit back more or less every time the visitors scored and it was only good defensive work which in the end denied the home side the winning points.
The game began with Blaydon having constant pressure in the first 10 minutes with the home side never able to get control of the ball and it came as no surprise after being being camped on the home line for a short period, flyhalf Ryan Foreman cleverly cut through between the posts for the opening score which he duly converted only to leave the field a few minutes later with an injury and took no further part in the game.   However, not to be outdone, the home side hit back with a long distance try, despite the hint of a knock on in the early build up, which Jason Israel added the first of his 3 conversions.   The game was end to end and midway through the half, centre Dan Holmes, after a visiting missed tackle, put the home side in front with a converted try and at this time Blaydon had to defend desperately.  Just before the break, replacement flyhalf Jordan Carey cut through for a replica of the first try by the player he replaced, kicking the easy conversion.
All square at the break, Blaydon quickly went in front when wing forward Rob Lenderyou streaked in after a good handling movement between backs and forwards and then a fine touch find by Carey saw Blaydon win a scrappy lineout but eventually replacement wing forward Sean Pyle showed impressive skills when side stepping two would be tacklers to score wide out and increase the visitors lead.
Carlisle then re-doubled their efforts and centre Chris Auld crashed over for another 7 pointer.
Unlike previous games, Blaydon retained their composure and several probing efforts were rewarded when centre Alex Clarke cut through between the posts for Carey to again add the extras.   The home side however, pressed Blaydon in the closing stages, and scrumhalf James Telford touched down following a tap penalty but with time running out, Blaydon stoutly defended and eventually the referee blew for time with the visiting side but about deserving the spoils and retain second place in the table.
We now have the seasional break and our next game will be at home on 4th January 2020 when Blackburn are our visitors.
A very Merry Christmas to all.

Blaydon 8, Harrogate 12

🔴⚫️Match Report 🔴⚫️

Saturday 7th December 2019

BLAYDON 8 – 12 HARROGATE

After defending solidly for the first 20 minutes and shipping only one converted try, Blaydon then got on the offensive reducing the arrears with an unconverted try and a penalty just before the break, giving them a narrow lead at half time.

The second half began in similar fashion to the first period with the visitors on the offensive in the early stages but gradually Blaydon upped a gear and by the 6th minute of injury time they still held their 1 point advantage. In the final 2 minutes however, things went horribly wrong with the game reduced to uncontested scrums, Blaydon won a line out on half way, and instead of retaining possession and working the clock down they inexplicably kicked ahead, lost possession, and thereafter the rest is history. The opposition gathered the ball, ran across field, Blaydon gave away a penalty and then immediately a second one following interference with the first one, and Harrogate ran through a disorganised Blaydon defence to score the winning try with the last move of the game. As stated previously Harrogate dominated early exchanges, Blaydon suffered a yellow card when Harry Borthwick got his marching orders, and in the 11th minute prop Connor Ward finished off a catch and drive for Steven Fox to add the extras.

Midway through the half, Blaydon came more into the game and flyhalf Ryan Foreman threaded through a narrow gap to reduce the arrears to only 2 points. Blaydon continued to attack and a forward misdemeanour saw the same player add a simple 3 points in front of the posts. Half time arrived and afterwards we saw the two sides both failing to take chances and wrong decisions cost each team chances to improve their scoreline until the game reached the eventful final minutes when Blaydon contrived to lose a game seemingly well within their control.

Next week we visit Carlisle who have previously beaten Harrogate and will no doubt be looking for another top scalp.

Kirkby Lonsdale 31, Blaydon 25

Kirkby Lonsdale 31 – 25 Blaydon

Having completed the double last season over the home side and on the back of 5 successive victories, second placed Blaydon seemed to be confident of recording another victory.   However, right from the start things did not go to plan and a knock on from the kick off and a missed tackle soon saw the home side take advantage and open up a 14 point lead as early as the 9th minute after tries by man of the match scrum half Ben Walker and winger Andrew Bargh both converted by Ryan Terry.
A reality check for Blaydon who immediately replied with a number of penetrating back moves but a mixture of poor handling and good home defence saw them take 10 minutes to reduce the arrears with a superb counter attack from half way which was Ryan Foreman and Nathan Bailey combine to puy full back Jordan Carey over between the posts for Foreman to add the extras.
Foreman very soon added a simple penalty from 30 metres and the visiting support sat back expecting another victory but continued good defence by Kirkby Lonsdale kept them out.   Two further home tries from breakdowns by hooker Dan Armistead and winger Harry Huddleston who finished off from 30 metres saw the gap widened.   Terry added the extras and just before half time a further 3 points following a forward indiscretion.   Blaydon’s only reply was another Foreman penalty.
Half time arrived with a 31 – 13 scoreline for Kirkby Lonsdale self inflicted by Blaydon’s poor handling and wrong options but immediately on the resumption, Blaydon upped a gear and 10 minutes inside the home 22 eventually saw prop Elliott Beattie score an unconverted try to narrow the gap.   The visitors continued to attack but tenacious defence by the home side continually denied them for the next 25 minutes before, with time ruynning out, Rob Lenderyou scored between the posts for Foreman to convert.
The home side kicked off with only a minute remaining but Blaydon collected and patient play, a ploy which was missing in the first half, saw Blaydon move the ball from one side to the other finishing up with a three on one overlap 20 metres out.    Unfortunately a pass was not taken and the referee, former Blaydon No 8 Gavin Jones, blew for time with the visitors reflecting after having completely dominated the second period, they only scored twice.
Next week is a rest week and we result on 7th December at home against 4th placed Harrogate.
Please note that the game against Harrogate sees the pre-match President’s Christmas Lunch priced at £20 with wine included.   Christmas theme!!!!   Dig out your Christmas jumpers!

Blaydon 36, Ilkley 18

Blaydon 36 – 18 Ilkley

The home side began well and the visitors struggled in the scrums but despite constant pressure in the opening stages, Blaydon by either wrong options or silly penalties conceded did not open their account and on their first visit to the Blaydon  half, visiting scrum half and star player Blake Morgan finished off a good movement for Charlie Ramsay to convert.
The home side immediately went back on the attack and eventually from a good catch and drive, hooker Gareth Henderson scored in the corner for Ryan Foreman to make an excellent conversion.    The home supporters may have thought this was the beginning of a resurgence but this was not to be so and after 20 minutes Ramsay again put the visitors in front with an easy penalty.   At this stage Blaydon lost Keith Laughlin with a yellow card but amazingly improved their possession and from another catch and drive this time scrum half Dan Taylor touched down and Foreman again added the extras.   Just before half time, the same player kicked an easy penalty to put Blaydon 17 – 10 in front at the interval.
The pattern of play did not change and Blaydon could not increase their lead and eventually the visitors reduced the arrears when Ramsay kicked another penalty.  On the hour, the game changed with Blaydon at last making use of good ball and making inroads on the visiting defence and following another forward drive, prop Alex Dodds touched down near the posts for Foreman to add the points again.   Blaydon continued to attack and a barnstorming run from second row Fred Lockwood which saw him make 40 metres shaking off several tackles and coming just short but quickly presented ball saw Rob Lenderyou touch down for another try and the bonus point.   The conversion was missed this time but Blaydon were now comfortably in the lead, however, on a rare visit, second row Eric King scored in the corner for the visitors to reduce the arrears.
Blaydon resumed normal service and just before the end, Foreman received possession at one side of the field and seeing Nathan Bailey unmarked on the opposite side, he cleverly kicked 60 metres for Bailey to out jump his opposite number, collect, and race in from 15 metres which Foreman duly converted and in the end Blaydon ran out comfortable winners.

The win sees Blaydon still in second place behind Billingham.   Next week we travel to Cumbria to take on Kirkby Lonsdale with a 2.15.p.m. kick off.

Morpeth 12 – Blaydon 34

🔴⚫️ Match Report 🔴⚫️ Morpeth 12 – 34 Blaydon

Paying their first visit to Mitford Road for 20 years a well drilled Blaydon side aided by a large following support came away with another 5 point victory despite going behind in the opening 2 mins following a messy first scrum which saw the referee award Morpeth a penalty try.

Not to be dismayed, the visitors immediately went up field and following a couple of darts up the middle, the ball was passed to James Cooney who beat off two tacklers and ran in from 15 metres to score a fine try which Ryan Foreman added the first of his 3 conversions. At this stage the home pack was dominating proceedings and a missed Blaydon tackle in the centre (the only one of the game) saw Captain Carl Hill put the home side 5 points up after 20 minutes. However, at this stage with Captain Jack Davidson and Harry Borthwick coming to the fore, Blaydon began to stretch the home defence and firstly Cam Bell was driven over and then Davidson himself with the help of his dominant pack. Neither try was converted with one conversion hitting the post but now in the lead, Blaydon never looked like being overtaken.

After the interval, despite winning good possession, the home side made poor use and Blaydon utilized the ball well and with their backs continually stretching the home defence, they were completely in charge and following another turnover on the half way line, good hands saw Dan Marshall break through once more, drawing the home full back and giving unselfishly Harry Borthwick a run in between the posts for another 7 pointer. The introduction of substitute Jack Appleton on the hour saw Blaydon inject speed on the wing and following his first touch of the ball, he ran strongly and cleverly kicked over the opposition for Marshall to gather the bouncing ball and widen the gap with a fine try which was duly converted by Foreman.

With Blaydon running down the clock, the home side, lacking possession, were unable to get field advantage and once again Blaydon’s backs swept upfield and were awarded an easy penalty in front of the posts which Foreman added 3 points.

The satisfying result sees Blaydon consolidate second place in the table and next week they have a home game kicking off at 2.15.p.m. against bottom club Ilkley who despite some close results, have only won 1 game this season and have a points differential of 127 – 274, the highest in the league.

Blaydon 38, Sandal 26

Blaydon 38–26 Sandal

Blaydon’s open play with backs and forwards combining well saw them score 4 tries and secure the bonus point by the 28th minute with their forwards particularly dominating play.   With ample possession, their three quarters made good ground and the scoreboard reflected their domination.   Harry Borthwick’s try saw Blaydon open up a 33 point gap two minutes before the interval.
The game began with the home side continually probing and it was wing forward Rob Lenderyou, who broke off a scrum 20 metres out, to touch down between the posts with Ryan Foreman adding the first of his 4 conversions.   Immediately on the re-start, Blaydon collected the kick-off and good hands saw centre Alex Clark brush off three would be tacklers to score a fine try wide out.   Unfortunately the same player suffered a facial injury a few minutes later and took no further part in the game with replacement Jack Appleton taking his place.    However, play continued in the same pattern and Dan Marshall scored a fine try which was added to when Elliott Beatty who finished off a forward drive, before Harry Borthwick got his usual as the home team completely dominated proceedings.
However, one minute before the break on a rare visit to Blaydon’s half, visiting winger James Eller saw the visitors reduce the gap with a well worked unconverted try in the corner.
This proved to be a game changer, just as last week, and for some reason again Blaydon’s ball supply dried up, handling became poor, and several wrong options saw Sandal presented with good ball and for the first time in the game their pack with Declan Thompson to the fore, saw scrum half Joe Bedford nip over before Thompson himself scored a fine try.   Luke Punton added the extras and then there was only a 12 point gap.   However, Blaydon got their act together and Marshall put the home side clear and despite Blaydon’s Captain Jack Davidson receiving a yellow card, Blaydon maintained their superiority although a late effort from visiting prop Tom Baxter reduced the arrears.
Blaydon once again got the five points with casual play in the second period again seeing them again looking over their shoulder but with a couple of games being postponed due to inclement conditions, the home side have now moved into second place in the table 6 points behind leaders Billingham.
The next league game is away to newly promoted Morpeth on Saturday 9th November – kick off 2.00.p.m, there will be no bus, travel by cars.  Come and support the team!
