Match report 3rd February; Billingham Lions 29, Blaydon Georgians 12

Match report 3rd February; Billingham Lions 29, Blaydon Georgians 12

The Georgians travelled to play Billingham who are flying high in the league this year , with only 18 players available to us. Injuries are crippling us ,and availability, whilst improving , still needs a higher level of commitment.

Once the whitewash was crossed by the players , then commitment was no longer an issue and tackling and supporting your team mates was never in doubt and we took the game to Billingham.

We pressed and attacked a much bigger side and put them under pressure to force mistakes and keep the ball away from them. Unfortunately in the first half there was an occasional gap that appeared, which good teams will exploit and Billingham scored 4 tries and swept up the pitch to take advantage of our frailty.

We did however score a great try from a great line ran by Rob Pyle  which finished one of our many attacks, clinically.

The second half saw us increase our intensity and again keep Billingham in their half for large periods of time through strong running by Pyle, Todd and Winter. Still with that threat of a break away, that happened early on in the half making the score 29-5.

Instead of caving in we upped our game again and with Rhys Burt orchestrating play with clever darting  runs and tremendous kicks into the corners and space. We attacked their line again and again until luke Tonks passed to Joey Davidson who barged and twisted his way over the line .

Making the final score 29-12 and a feeling that we had put up a good performance and account of ourselves .

What a Weekend of Rugby!!!

What a rugby weekend ahead, we start with the first game of the Rugby World Cup, France v All Blacks tonight, then Steve Borthwick’s England take on Argentina on Saturday night and to finish off on Sunday afternoon we have Scotland versus South Africa!!!! As you know all games will be shown 1888 Sports Bar & Café, get yourself along and soak up the atmosphere.
Our BRFC teams came away with 3 wins last week, which is fantastic and well done to all involved.
Our First XV sponsored by First Mortgage, took the spoils against Pontefract last week, battling away in the final 15 minutes with 14 players to secure the win. This weekend they are away to York RUFC, in what sounds like an excellent excuse for a day trip on the train, as York’s ground is a gentle stroll from the station.
We have a packed programme at Crowtrees over the weekend, with our Second XV taking on Morpeth Reivers in their opening game of the Candy League. The squad looks very good and get yourself along to support the lads, kick off 3pm on the AGP.
On Sunday we have our Under 16 and 18 Girl’s teams in action for the first time this season taking on Houghton and Whitley Bay Rockcliffe respectively, kick off 2pm.
Lastly our Blaydon Red Kites – Women’s Rugby Second XV are in friendly action away at Houghton taking on their Hornets side, which should be a competitive fixture.
Please try to get along and support our teams as they really do appreciate it. Enjoy your weekend.

Senior Squad Update

Senior Squad Update

As we continue to bolster our senior rugby infrastructure we are delighted to welcome Chris Stewart back in to the fold, Chris is a product of the Blaydon youth system and he has returned to where it all started to coach the Georgians.

Along side Chris is Steven Davidson, who is replacing the very big shoes Howie Gillfillan has left, to fill as team manager. Howie has stepped aside to focus on wearing his blazer on first team match days. The club would like to say a massive thank you to Howie for everything he has done to make sure the 2nd Team has been run so well over the last 15-20 years.

Further Updates to follow.
