European rugby trophies tour, calling at Blaydon RFC on Sunday 24th March

Rugby fans will be able to get up close to the prestigious Heineken Champions Cup and European Rugby Challenge Cup trophies as they embark on a tour of the region before the Newcastle 2019 Finals in May.
Community groups, businesses, rugby clubs and schools will all be part of the Trophies Tour. The three-week programme will cover 59 separate events and will take place from Saturday 23 March until Sunday 14 April. As part of the tour, the trophies will be at Blaydon Rugby Club between 11am and 12.30pm on Sunday 24 March.
Taking place over the weekend of 10-11 May 2019, Newcastle is hosting the Greatest Weekend in Rugby. It kicks off at St James’ Park with the European Rugby Challenge Cup Final on Friday 10th May (kick off 19.45) followed by the Heineken Champions Cup Final on Saturday 11th May (kickoff 17.00)
During the Trophies Tour fans will have the chance to win tickets to the Challenge Cup Final on Friday 10 May by getting the best selfie with the trophies and sharing them on social media (Twitter and Facebook) with the hashtag #Newcastle2019TrophiesTour.
Mick Hogan, Newcastle 2019 event director, said: “In the build-up to, and during the Newcastle 2019 Finals, we are looking to engage with a wide range of communities in the region and the Trophies Tour is a crucial part of this. As well as the rugby community, we want to attract new people to the sport and build excitement for what promises to be the greatest weekend in rugby.
“Both the Heineken Champions Cup and the European Rugby Challenge Cup trophies are very prestigious and impressive. We’re sure they will generate tremendous interest and will draw in large crowds to see the two trophies. As well as drumming up excitement for the Newcastle 2019 Finals, we want to showcase our wonderful region to fans from all over the world.”
Newcastle 2019 is the fastest-selling Heineken Champions Cup final ever, with fans waiting for news of a further, limited release of tickets on general public sale as allocations for fans of finalist clubs are being re-assessed throughout the season. Tickets for the European Rugby Challenge Cup Final are also showing healthy sales and it is on course to be one of the most attended finals ever.

Blaydon Development progress to final of Durham County 3rd Team Cup

Great admiration to Consett 3rds, who came up against a very youthful Development side on the full size AGP, but although the referee offered to cut short the game they stayed with it to the end and scored 2 good trys, the whole game was played in great spirit.

Thanks to Derek for the photos 161 online at https://www.flickr.com/photos/26086313@N08/albums/with/72157706895656514

The Development side contain around 9 players under the age of 20, the speed and ability of these guys, added to some ‘older’ heads to contribute bags of experience was just too much for Consett 3s. There was so much pace in this side, both forwards and backs, Consett had no idea where the next line break was coming from. It was a very entertaining game for the crowd with some brilliant trys and played in brilliant spirit by Consett who were just up against a better side on the day, their Captain & team did the Consett club proud, it happens, we’ve all been on the wrong side of unmatched sides, you play, you shake hands, you drink in the bar and move on, all achieved. Our thanks also to Keith Oliver, Paul Winter and Ewan Lowry, all of whom played for Consett as they sustained injuries as the game came to a close.

Scorers:

Trys: Mark MacC 3, Craig Y, Dammo, Rob P, Damien A-B, Jak T, Ryan R, James M, Paddy, Savs, ??

Conv: Jak 4, James M 2, Mark Mac 1

Highs & Lows:

  • Line speed and hits in defence were immense, especially around the edges of the mauls from the likes of Ewan, Rob, Jake and Dammo.
  • Oliver, Paddy and Ewan from the forwards were everywhere, in attack  and defence
  • Breaks came from everywhere, especially, Jak T, Mark Mac, Max, Craig Y, Ryan, then  Savs and James when they came on.
  • David R got the ball out wide, rounded the winger, who had a lot more experience than him, (shall we say) and then somehow seemed to run around in a circle and managed to get himself tangled in his Zimmer frame and step out of play.
  • Consett had no answer to Craig Y, Ryan or Mark Mac jinking runs
  • Paddy secured good lineout ball
  • James Murray was having a wingding time on the bench, first deciding he was injured and couldn’t play, declaring he couldn’t play 9, 10 or 15, then feeling left out as he was not starting (although he was part of the Bricks squad till their game was conceded)  so we put him on at 10 and then 9 in the 2nd half, it shut him up and he played well at both, as James does, possibly just experiencing the change of life, early…..
  • Looked  like Jake broke his nose, but he was convinced it was just a bit blood and was only happy when he went back on
  • Great break from Dammo thro from around halfway on the fullback, got to 22, with pace to burn idling in 1st gear on either side of him, too many options, fullback took him down, renamed ‘Dammo, won’t pass’
  • Matt R crossed the try line but didn’t seem to want to put it down!
  • Keith O went on for Consett, great sportsmanship, but shortly afterwards he was probably having 2nd thoughts as Ewan and Rob hit him as he received a looping pass, which set him up to get hit, ‘Oh Sh1te’ was heard, just before he was hit hard.
  • Paul Winter went on for Consett in front row and him and Tom described the scrums as aggressive cuddling, not many smiles on the photos from them, too busy preparing for the cuddle!
  • Savs made a great break from own 22 and slowed up to let James M catch up, to run it in from 22 and score…
  • Ewan Lowry went on for Consett and immediately ran over the top of Damien A-B, but lost the ball with the line beckoning.
  • Adam came on, went for glory near the line, but knocked on

Great display from a very talented, with Winlaton 2s beating Sunderland 2s in the other leg, its sets up a local derby for the final, date still to be agreed.

It is with sadness Blaydon RFC announce the loss of John Thompson

Sadly JT  passed away suddenly, funeral arrangements:

Whitley Bay Crematorium  at 12.45 Tues 5th March.

Gathering after is at St Marys Suite in Spanish City.

John played colts rugby for Blaydon in the late 70s and senior rugby following that, returning to play social rugby for the Bricks subsequent to that.

John will be missed by many.

Our sympathies go to his daughter Jenny  and her family.

Falcons U18 to play on Blaydon RFC AGP this Saturday

Newcastle Falcons Under-18s are in action this Saturday 19th January when they take on Worcester Warriors Under-18s.

The game is at Blaydon RFC with a 2pm kick-off, entry is free of charge.

Festive Rugby – Blaydon XV V Ryton XV – 1 win each

Overall score over the 2 legs was win to Blaydon 74 to 39, but great respect to Ryton who won the Boxing Day game and had a lot of good young talent on display, as well as turning up short for the 2nd leg, to make sure that game went ahead.

With a 3 day turn around, the sides in the games were always going to differ over the 2 games and with the depth of players we have at Blaydon, the 2nd game was always going to be a harder game for Ryton, great respect to them fielding 2 teams in 3 days.

Blaydon used 30 players over the 2 games.

Scrum gave Ryton loads of problems, which it was bound too, with Paul & Keith Winter and Tom Hirst in the front row, Ryton must dread seeing those guys come out onto the park. They must have had higher hopes when they saw Tom wasn’t on the pitch on the 29th, but Adam Keeler was, neither day was good for Ryton’s scrummage.

Blaydon Firsts have a critical game on the 5th January against Hull in top 3 clash, so none of the players in that squad were available, much to their disappointment, such is the thirst in the club to play this fixture.

See pictures below, but for the hats and the snow, identical…

Boxing Day 2018 – Ryton XV 34 Blaydon XV 26

This game had everything; a nice sunny day, a large crowd supporting both sides, two evenly matched sides and two referees who were determine to keep it that way…

Blaydon started and finished the strongest, with a 14 point lead with try’s from Dan Turland and Lewis, both converted by Lewis in first half. We could and should have had more trys before halftime, but for various reasons, that was the score as we changed ends. We then had a disastrous 20 minutes at the start of the 2nd half, Ryton were playing down the hill now and with fresh legs in the pack started to break through tackles and managed to starve Blaydon of ball. What little ball we got was kicked away, one such kick resulted in the young Ryton fullback running in from half way.

Highs & Lows:

  •  Good to see Jack Inglis and Lewis Hill back playing in Blaydon shirts
  •  The Winters were doing festive juggling and dropping, nothing new there…
  •  Scrum gave Ryton loads of problems, which it was bound too, with Paul & Keith Winter and Tom Hirst in the front row
  • First half forwards dominated and made good yards, but struggled a little when Ryton brought on fresh legs for the 2nd half
  • Jack, Ewan and Jake were all round the park
  • Jak Tuck had a good game at 9, with good distribution
  • Lewis and Dan made big yards when in possession
  • James ran us out of trouble from the back

Scorers:
• Trys; Dan, Lewis, Jack Inglis, Rodders

Highs & Lows:

  •  Excuse me, I have to believe this game was played by aliens, this double of Keith Winter in photos is shaped in what looks like a passing position, that surely didn’t happen
  •  Not sure how long have I been away, thoughts I was there Boxing day but this report in rugby has to be the equivalent of walking into the starwars bar – Can’t really believe what you are seeing …..

• See photos:

  •  Not being there I had to consult Keith, who confirmed my thoughts from the photos, that James thought he’d scored a try over the 22, although Keith remembered it may have been the halfway, it’s in colour take a look.
  •  Adam Keeler takes on Ryton pack, it wasn’t fair… try
  •  There is not a lot of conviction in scrumhalfs eyes on talking Sean on the hoof
  •  James shows a number of cleans sets of heels…
  •  Keith too hung over to run, he passed.
  •  Matt Thompson as flyhalf running with the ball perfectly held (NOT) to release the backs or bring in the forwards on the inside. He may have scored, but let’s not let the truth get involved/in the way of a match report…. Never have before!
  • Look Andy giving a penalty to Blaydon, M.J. take note on how to do that….

  •  Ewan Lowry, Paul Strachan and Adam Turnbull scored conversions – what was the selection for kicking, furthest away from the try scored?
  •  James Murray didn’t get the jug in for scoring 3 trys…. Judge Paul Winter to deal with this at next Court session…..

Some input from those attending:

  •  Lewis Hill scored Sean Pyle missed the kick
  •  Someone else scored, Sean Pyle missed the kick
  •  Hopey knocked on
  • Someone else scored, Sean Pyle missed the kick
  • Hopey thought he would enter into festive spirit and change the rules to match NFL and threw a few forward passes
  •  Someone else scored, Sean Pyle missed the kick

***Half Time ***

  •  Harry split Strachs head open and Windy played Nurses. Strachs splitting his head because it’s as soft as a peach
  •  Matt Thompson played 10 and refused to pass to anyone within 10m, opting for a “Miss 3” every time
  •  Ewan scored from Lewis Hill’s crossfield kick, Matt missed the conversion
  •  Paul Winter started a fight with the Ryton 8, Owen Reed jumped on his back and tried to drag him to the ground by his beard, then wanted to chin him
  •  Someone scored and Strachs slotted the conversion.

Scorers:
• Trys; So suspected scorers:
o James Murray 3
o Adam Keeler 1
o Ewan Lowry 1
