Blaydon RFC AGP all but complete and plans for the season well on track.

2018/19 Season sees the introduction of an Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) at Blaydon RFC which is great news given how well our 1st team played on such a surface, for it’s last 4 home games at Kingston Park last season. Blaydon 1st Team started a transition last season, moving from a forward dominant team to a mobile team of starters and finishers, perfectly suited to an AGP and great for today’s players and spectators alike. If you want to be part of something special, as it develops, come join us!

The pitch is ‘State of the art’ and has been implemented under the RFU – Rugby 365 initiative, everything is brand new; pitch, floodlights, sponsors signs (and new sponsors), dugouts,  posts, perimeter fencing, the lot!  and it will surely help take rugby at Blaydon RFC to a new level.

The pitch is finished construction and results of final testing are expected soon to approve it for use. The Pitch will be used by all areas of the club; senior teams, youth teams and on Friday nights for Vets games.

On the wider plans for the season:

  • We have a brand new website to improve/update our profile, consolidated with our youth and providing information related to all areas of the club; Rugby, Functions, Car Boot, Sponsorship, Event Calender and active News stories
  • We have a new Director of Rugby; Matt Thompson who started our rugby transformation after taking over part way through last season and we’re excited to see it complete
  • 1st Team:
    • Our prime objective for the season is to make an immediate return to National Division 2 North, which we know will be a challenge, as there are some very good teams competing in the North Premier league.
    • Our playing squad is swelling with new signings and great to see many players making a return to Blaydon RFC
  • Season start – 15th September sees the official opening of the AGP, with an array of youth games, 1st team home game v Hull and a family fun day, one not to be missed.
  • Our Youth set-up is to be envied, they have plans to increase the squad sizes/amount of teams and introduce a Girls teams at appropriate age group
  • We will continue to work on how we transition players from our youth to our senior teams, with more and more players from the youth playing for senior teams at Blaydon, we want to increase this further.
  • Senior teams – we are again running 1sts, Georgians, Development, Bricks and the Crows (our Vets) and fixtures will be published shortly
  • We are currently reviewing our overall club development and will reach out soon to get input from all areas to help us shape and prioritise the associated improvement initiatives

2018/19 will be an exciting period for all areas of Blaydon RFC, don’t watch from the outside, come get involved and be part of the club’s journey!

From all at Blaydon RFC

Blaydon RFC Annual General Meeting – Wednesday 16th May at 7:30

Our club AGM is being held on Wednesday 16th May , starting at 7:30pm, attendance is limited to  members only.

March 100 Club Draw announced

Congratulations to this months winners:

Get behind Blaydon 1st Team in their run in, to the end of the season

There has never been a more important time to support our Blaydon team than now, starting with their home game on Saturday against Huddersfield, please come along and show your support.

2017/18 has been frustrating, in effect a rebuilding season with Blaydon unexpectedly in a 2nd relegation battle following the loss of the majority of the our pack at the end of last season, but right now the outcome of the season is still in our own hands. Blaydon have 7 games remaining, 5 of which are at home, so a possible 35 points still to play for this season.

Matt Thompson has taken over as Head Coach, the rebuilding is underway as we look to the future at Blaydon. It’s strange for our Blaydon team to have a lighter, more mobile pack and its taking time to be successful with the new approach, we have certainly struggled recently on the heavy winter pitches. The positives, the grounds will harden and we have a back division that can reap havoc on the best of teams in National 2 North, with ball in hand.

Aligned with a more mobile team, we are starting the development of our Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP)  on the 26th March so it’s ready for the 2018/19 season. To give our team the best chance of success on a good surface this season, we are moving the last 3 home games to the Falcons ground, Kingston Park.

It’s all set up for what could be, a very exciting run in, get behind the team, come show and voice your support, Pump the Crow!

Thank you

Bruce Costello, on behalf of the Executive at Blaydon RFC

It is with sadness Blaydon RFC announce the loss of Tom Bullerwell 1918-2018

Tom passed away on 5th March 2018 just 8 weeks after celebrating his 100th Birthday.

Tom was the last surviving member of the undefeated Blaydon side of 1945//46 playing alongside Tim Forbes, Panky Holliday, Roger Kirkup and Kiwi International  Cricketer Martin Donnelly.

Tom was born in Rowlands Gill and served in the 8th Army in World War 2 being awarded the Military Medal in 1945

After serving in World War 2 Tom lived in Kenya for a short while before returning to this country and living in Bedford where he became an active member of Bedford Blues and supported the team until the last few years.

The thoughts of Blaydon Rugby club are with his son Ian and family

A Grand Old Man whose last attendance at Blaydon was the opening of the New Clubhouse in 1996.
