What a difference a few players returning makes, even with some late cry offs for flue, runny noses (Mr Barlow) and runny bums….. we still had a full starting 15 with all position covered by people who played in that role.

To their credit West End turned up short to get a game and we managed to get 3 players from the 2s bench to start for them, which may have been a risky decision, but we will always play our own team when we can.

Big thank you to Grumpy for refereeing the game

This was a combination of forward power and good lines of running from the backs, highs and lows:
• Windy threw a dummy in the warm-up and all bought it, but the 8 must have seen it as when he tried it for real he got whipped out ….
• Surry second try involved him running across the back division and handing each of them off, you would have thought the 5th one would have ducked under the hand off, but no
• Chris Collins making a comeback, chipped over, outstripped the defence to the touch down, but knocked on and was followed in by Divers who did a second knock on
• Stu Bailey played his first game for us of the season and played well at scrum half
• Surrey called to see if he could get a game, why not – scored 3 trys and tackled well
• Thacks puts out, well not the best pass but well taken by Chester who put in a really good line kick
• Joe asked me to include his conversion from the side line
• Playing for the opposition, Divers puts in a clearance kick 50 yards down the pitch, fly half next week for him.
• 38 nil up at half time

2nd Half:
• Stu Bailey in own 22 runs side to side, caught, ball stripped and W.E. winger runs thro Joe doing an impression of a hologram for W.E. first try
• Chester hands off Divers, breaks thro with ball in one hand ( kids don’t copy) Divers catches him and dumps him and he looses the ball.
• Stu pass to the side line was intercepted and 2nd try to W.E.
• Input to match report from Coatsey; Thacks at half way done for forward pass, he even argued with the side line after the ref, closely followed by a second forward pass near the try line, but of course that was not forward either, Thacks shock his head off so much I thought it may fall off
• Surrey and Joe line up to double tackle the W.E. winger, good job Joe got him as Surry bit the dust clutching air……
• If the shock of a missed tackle wasn’t bad enough, Surrey then tried a bicycle kick of a ball going into touch, his tackle was closer. He had a great game but let’s not let the truth get in the way of a good match report
• The versatile Paul Winter could be seen playing second row, then 6 & 7, what next, well afterwards in the bar him and Grumpy agreed to share a half each at fly half, keep an eye out for that one….
• Thacks tackles Divers and dumps him, Thacks tackling, it must have been concussion from all that head shaking
• Strachs goes with a 4 man overlap, throws a bad pass, flipped up by Windy and W.E. gets another interception try, reality, a good tackle from Joe held him up but ref (grumpy) gave it any way, as he sad he saw a ‘dab it down’ in his words

Good win with backs and forwards linking together, some good direct running and dominance in the scrums, well done. Next week we take on Blyth away, first 2:15 kick-off, they are 3rd top, so that will show us how far we have come.

Call Connection

Blaydon Rugby Club sponsor to create 100 new jobs in North East

The UK’s largest telephone lead generation company for the insurance sector and sponsor of Blaydon Rugby Club, Call Connection, is set to extend its operations to the North East.

Call Connection is investing over £1million in the move, which will create up to 100 new jobs in the region in a state-of-the-art, 6,500 sq ft contact centre at Pandon on Newcastle Quayside. The new operation will be open in November and fully operational by January 2014.

Founded in 2003, Call Connection has twice been named as a Sunday Times ‘Top 100 Company’ and holds the prestigious Investors in People Silver Standard award. It currently has a contact centre in Ipswich and a London sales office, employing 250 full-time staff.

The company will be recruiting an initial launch team of 25 contact centre staff ahead of the January launch, with further expansion planned to increase staff numbers further early in 2014 and creating up to 100 jobs by the end of next year. The team will be responsible for telephone lead trading work with clients including the AA, Admiral and Aviva.

Call Connection’s managing director, Graeme Kalbraier, was pleased to be bringing the company to the North East: “Call Connection is ten years’ old now and with demand for our services rapidly increasing, we’re in the best possible position to expand our operation.

“I am delighted to be opening an office in Newcastle and recruiting the new staff who will make a valuable contribution to the continued success of our business. We have teamed up with Adecco and Randstad to help us manage our local recruitment – we’re looking for good talkers with bags of personality and ideally, about six months’ of contact centre experience.

“We will be investing heavily in the development of the team and rewarding them with benefits including a highly competitive salary and extensive training opportunities.”

North East Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, James Ramsbotham, said: “The creation of over a 100 new jobs is fantastic news and further evidence that the regional service sector continues to bounce back strongly following the recession.

“Call Connection’s significant investment is a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to the North East and their belief that our talented and friendly workforce can deliver this exciting new project.”

James Greetham, a supervisor working at Call Connection’s Ipswich office said: “The team in Ipswich are all very excited about the expansion and it shows that the company is growing from strength to strength.

“I’ve been part of the close-knit team here for six years and with numerous training opportunities, a great salary, bonus schemes and career progression opportunities, I can’t recommend working here highly enough. We’re looking forward to welcoming our North East colleagues to the team in the next few months.”

Blaydon Development 50 – Durham City Saracens 17

First of all I would just like to thank Simon Morgan for stepping in at the 11th hour to referee. We are 6 weeks into the season and the injury list just keeps getting longer.  10 changes from last week saw Adam Keeler, Ryan Convery, Stevie Dryden and former colt Dan Grey join the forwards with Andy Richardson, Lowsey, Matty Bell, Jack Emerson, Thaxs and Joe (the flash) Snowdon join the back division.

A good physical warm up by Scott and Bumbum had the forwards fired up and a run of back play taken by Lowsey and mr coyne looked impressive so we were as ready as a team that had made as many changes could be.

On the river side pitch we elected to play up the slope the first half. Our trademark aggressive contact from the kick off put Durham under pressure just outside the 22, from  the turn over ball we moved within 5 metres of the line but in the thick of it all lee took a short arm in the face, and in our hast to score we spilled the ball close to the try line,  Durham broke free and  ran the length of the pitch to score 0-5.

Lee retires with a broken nose 5mins into the game Rob Pyle moved to centre and Matty Bell made his debut  on the wing. We were back on the attack from the kick off but after being sucked into a ruck Andy our scrum half emerged hobbling from an old war wound, Lowsey moved to scrum half and Dan grey another one of Scott Finlay’s colts made his senior début at centre.  Durham used the confusion to score a second try 0-10. We all knew  that if we stuck to the game plan our chances would come and  we were rewarded after good inter-passing and support play scoring three times. Rob (daisy cutter) Pyle ran a fantastic line to cut through the centres and score under the posts converted by jack , Joe (the flash) Snowdon from a pass to the wing 50 meters out took off quick as lightening  to score in the corner and a Blaydon forward scored near the post from a ruck again converted by jack , which i missed. Half time score 17-10.

Joe Millia had to go to work and on came Steve Dryden. We kicked off having the advantage of the slope and the surprise appearance of the sun at our backs. Durham came out the more determined of the two teams. We seemed happy just to plod and they grabbed another score converted making the score 17-17. A wakeup call but still Durham came back at us. Then for me the turning point of the game.

After soaking up more pressure and big defensive tackles from Rob and Callum we regained the ball. Taking a few seconds to look up Mr Coyne placed a high cross kick to the wing which had our back line running after the ball, landing just short of the 22 meter line, the ball hanging in the air the sun blinding the Durham players long enough for Lowsey to arrive just as the ball landed, as he bent down to pick the ball up it bounced off his knee for  Joe (the flash) Snowdon to kick the ball forward and chase it over the line for his second try. Unconverted but a 4th try and bonus point 22-17.

We picked up the intensity and began to batter the away team. With 20 mins remaining Stevie Dryden got knocked clean out. Glass chin Dryden as he is now known left the field of play replaced by Steve Thaxs who suffering with man flu took up position on the wing. Now in full flow we scored another 4 try’s all converted by jack. We attacked at will not sure who scored3 of them but it was a great all-round performance to watch.

The score at 43-17 we allowed Durham to rally one last time but 5 meters out a dropped ball was fly hacked down the field by the man of the moment the flash, rampaging down the pitch he again kicked the ball forward running past the defence and with 8 meters to go he tapped the ball forward with deft skill to dive on the ball inches in front of the chasing defender for his hat trick. Final score 50-17

Blaydon 24 Cinderford 14

[match id=93]

Blaydon made it three in a row with this 5 point win over fellow strugglers Cinderford who remain rooted in the nether regions of the league.

Whilst the score-line suggests a comfortable victory Blaydon needed to be on their mettle in defence as the visitors at times enjoyed a lions share of possession. So much so that in the opening quarter they took up residence in the home 22, spurning penalty after penalty in favour of a line-out catch and drive.

Blaydon had little option but to soak up the pressure but they did so successfully and went on to run-in 3 first half tries.

Skipper Keith Laughlin secured the opener from close range after a Tom Banks burst from half-way, and then Banks grabbed the first of his brace with another break and fine jinking run through the defence. Andrew Baggett added the conversion and was on the mark again when Jason Smithson made it 17-0 in the 35th minute.

Cinderford finally got some reward for their earlier pressure when winger Nevero Codlin touched down in the last play of the half, Mike Wilcox converting.

Blaydon were quickly back in control just 2 minutes into the second period, securing a try bonus point when Tom Grimes broke clear in mid-field with a searing run to release Banks who scooted in down the left wing. A touch-line conversion by Baggett completed the Blaydon scoring and much of the remaining possession was controlled by Cinderford.

They pulled back another 7 points when prop-forward William Davis completed a drive by the pack, Wilcox again on target, but despite much huffing and puffing never looked likely to get any closer.

From the Touchline – Sat 19th Oct

Today we welcome Cinderford who make the long treck from the Forest of Deane in search of their second victory of the season having won once against our opponents last week Hull Ionians on the third week of the season, the score being 31 – 7.

Last week, despite being well adrift at half time, Cinderford recovered to force a draw 34 all with Henley scoring in the process, five tries.

Their defeats have been against Rosslyn Park, Coventry, Doncaster and Richmond two of which we have played winning against Coventry and losing in London to Rosslyn Park.

Last season’s results saw each team win the away match and the Cinderford victory at Blaydon ended our ten match winning sequence in the mid season period.

Games between the two sides have always been well contested, being close, and high scoring. Added spice today may well see the inclusion of Sam Hanks in the centre following his transfer to Cinderford in the close season.

Our first visit to Hull for seven seasons last week saw us come away with a healthy

30 – 5 victory gained in difficult wet and dreary conditions. Hull battled well in the forwards but had little to offer elsewhere and despite late changes in the team, we stuck to our task and through the endeavours of Harry Bate, Tommy Banks scored the bonus point try at the death. Other late changes saw Jonathan Hames make his 1st team debut from the bench after joining us from Consett in the close season.

Blaydon Georgians also travelled to Hull to take on the unbeaten Ionians 2nd XV and unfortunately, after leading for most of the game, they conceded a late try and conversion to lose 22 – 17 in the closing stages. However, the trip was enjoyed by all, returning home at the early hour of 7.45.p.m. to enable all to join in the Marty Lonsdale wedding celebrations!

Other results last week saw neighbours Tynedale sneak a late win over Worthing, Coventry returned to winning form against Old Albanian, Rosslyn Park swamped Wharfedale, Esher won the London derby against Blackheath, and surprise side Loughborough Students continued their winning ways over Fylde. The games resulted in Doncaster leading the table by four points from the students with Coventry, Rosslyn Park and Esher just behind. At the other end of the table, Tynedale and ourselves climbed out of the bottom three, leaving Ionians firmly entrenched in last place.

Today we also welcome past players and former members to the Annual Lunch, particularly Bobby Snaith who has travelled over from South Africa on vacation. Bobby played for Blaydon in the 60’s/70’s era and also for Durham County during that period.

A spectator at our last game was Peter Horan now in New York who was here for a family reunion. Peter played for Blaydon in the late 50’s for five seasons and appeared many times on the 1st XV.

Bricks season is in the balance, injuries, retirements, people moved away and some just not available….. Last Saturday ended up in our game being canned as short notice, our apology to Ashington. This week we were really struggling getting a side, with a long injury list, people away and some just disappeared, but up stepped a number of people to help. Our thanks go to:

• Scott, Callum and Rob Pyle from the Development squad,
• Vinnie who played after originally planning to skip this week as he flys out on holiday
• Gav Stainsby for coming back to rugby after a period out
• Richard Hails coming back after not playing last season, trying to play with flu, we almost killed him
• Big thanks to Chris Morton for stepping in to referee when Durham could not support our game

After winning the Durham Shield 4 times in 5 years we are seriously short of players and need help to keep the season going, after 3 league games we have yet to win a game, so it could be a long hard season if we don’t recruit/get players back quickly.

Our season preparation has not been good, we made the mistake of not doing any warm up games, got battered by a ringer Ryton side in our first game and had to can our 3rd fixture last week. Add to this all the new players who came in, we looked ill structured and rusty.

The game started well, starting with two backrows in the centres and a strong pack we had only one game plan, take it on in the forwards and have the centres bring it back to the forwards, so we were set, we played the smaller top pitch to help our game plan, the issue, aside from the last 15 minutes that game plan went out the window.

We were dominant in the scrums, struggled getting decent consistent line out ball and did a rolling maul once, for about 30 yards and obviously did not like that, as we didn’t do it again. Instead we decided to stand one man off, made great 5 yards ground, in the opposite direction to all our support and lost the ball to a very mobile pack, then continued to do it, time after time.

The Novos side was quick, had loads more mobility, tackled well and scored 4 trys from turnovers in their own half when we got caught isolated without support, were consumed by 4 to 5 Novos players and the ball stripped and off they went.

Some highlights from the game:
• Keiths face when he found out he was open side, then after he missed a couple of tackles, chasing whippets, but when he hit them they really felt it.
• GB on the hoof, got dumped
• Vinnie made some good breaks
• Richard could hardly breath, out on a good show but was wearing Keith’s hands and had a bit of dropsy
• Thacks kept trying long passes, not his forte
• Gav, made some good breaks, but on one occasion got taken out by a sniper when in the open
• Joe did a bit of rolling around in his own 22
• People played out of position to ensure we kept our fixture, thanks everyone

Thanks to everyone who played and supported, it was a very healthy sideline with lots of capability with some of the worst rugby watchers, providing input to our side and the referee.

Thanks to all who played, we showed glimpses of what we could do, showed as a club when things are tough, people around us will always step up.

Thanks go to Steph (The Beast) Mullen who at the age of 50+ (quite a plus) has had to give way to injury and retire following problems with his shoulder last season, good to see him on the side line yesterday supporting the team.

Hull Ionians 5 – Blaydon 30

[match id=92]

Blaydon cruised to a comfortable win on their first visit in seven years to Brantingham Park in a game dominated by the forwards. Conditions were far from conducive to back play and flank-forward Harry Bate in particular took full advantage of some poor defending by the home side.

Andrew Baggett opened the scoring with a 10th minute penalty and then added the points to the first try when from a break down the right centres Tom Banks and Tom Grimes combined to send in Tom Jeffery for his 3rd of the season.

By the interval another Baggett penalty had taken the Blaydon advantage to 11 points with little or no response from Hull, and nothing changed in the early exchanges after the break.

Try No2 arrived courtesy of some more powerful work by the pack culminating in Bate storming into the 22 for Keith Laughlin the other flanker to finish off and Baggett convert.

The home side finally got their act together and pulled back 5 points through fly-half Chris Reakes but Blaydon were soon to restore the differential when Bate crashed over, Baggett again on target.

At 5-25 the game was effectively over but Blaydon continued to press for a 4th and bonus earning try, at one stage winning 5 line-outs against the throw. With time running out they finally secured the elusive score with Bate, inevitably, setting it up for Banks.
