It has been a number of years since we played Northern IIIs, it was great to re-establish games between us and this was a really entertaining game that could have easily been won by either side with Northern coming strong at the end, but tackling held up from the Bricks to keep them out.

Bricks had the best of the start of the game and if they had used the two or three clear overlaps this could have been a bit more comfortable.

Highs/Lows:

  • Bum Bum called us an hour before the game and showed up to make his fifth appearance of the season and earned his Bricks Polo shirt in the second half.
  • Ian Bennie joined us, his first game for a number of years and got one of the fastest yellow cards we’ve seen, better luck next week.
  • Rob Pyle guested for us from the Development side in the centre, tackled everything.
  • Horse, where do I start, he had a great game making numerous yards and got round the pitch like a back row and scored a try.  That said;
  • Horse must have had a little too much turkey as his ‘bottom’ came right through his shorts which ripped top to bottom, he claims quality of material, we are standing by, quantity of ‘ar*e’
  • Horse with a 3 on one and a flyhalf at that, Horse decided to hold onto it (or the ball got stuck in his hoof) and trot over the flyhalf who made a great tackle and wrapped up the ball and ‘our little pony’
  • Richard Pike did a good job for us at flyhalf in his second game for the Bricks
  • Bum Bum did a good job of being in the right place at the wrong time for Northern and un-gentlemenly shout for the Northen player to pass him the ball, which he did, stopping a try if the ball had gone the other way. Sneaky devil
  • Joe; went to Novos andjust got to Northern in time, then did himself in with 2 proteindrinks just before the game and had to come off before half time, but recovered to go back on 10 mins into the second half.
  • Paul Winter was everywhere and really up for the game, him, BigLad and Craig had the Northern front row where they wanted them, driving their scrum backwards. It was no surprise when it went uncontested in the second half.
  • Keith fingers Winter, blamed the sun in his eyes for the drop of the ball from the tap penalty
  • Chester, good to have him back made loads yards in the centre, fluffed a kick and insists he never missed a tackle in the centre, but accepts the match report is factual, so he did ……
  • Stu played well at scrum half and caught his opposite number a number of times.
  • Having two forwards playing at Scrumhalf and Flyhalf  meant on a number of occasions we have loads in the rucks and mauls and no one at 9 and 10, but hey it all worked.

So good game, good result which should help us with our league position, which is currently bottom, but with wins against Gateshead and now Northern we should move up a little. Next week another league encounter with Sunderland.

Blaydon 19 – Rosslyn Park 18

The advantage swung back and forth in this exciting clash at Crow Trees with Blaydon finally taking a deserved lead midway through the second period but then Rosslyn Park pulling back the deficit to just one point late on only to fail with the vital conversion kick.

Scott Sneddon landed 2 early penalties for the visitors but Blaydon full-back Simon Barber latched onto an Andrew Baggett chip over the defence to score the opening try. By the interval Park were back in front when Adam Bellamy crashed over from a tap penalty move but Blaydon swiftly took control after the restart.

Electing to ignore a series of kickable penalties in favour of a line-out drive their enterprise looked to have been in vain until winger Tom Jeffery collected a loose clearance and stormed through a shocked defence for a fine try’

Seeking further success another penalty to the corner then resulted in a more fortuitous score  as they lost the line-out only for the ball to bounce kindly for Fran Entressengle, the replacement hooker having only just joined the fray.

Facing a 3rd defeat of the season Park were galvanised into attack and with time running out were rewarded with a tremendous solo effort by Tom Howe who picked the ball off his toes and set off cross field in a mazy run to  score wide-out. Sneddon, with thus far a 100% record, had the opportunity to win the game but his effort drifted well wide.

Esher 24 – Blaydon 20

[match id=103]

Disappointingly it only resulted in a losing bonus point but Blaydon’s long journey south produced a cracking game between two top sides that could have gone either way. Trailing 24-13 going into the final quarter Blaydon threw everything at the home side, Chris Wearmouth was driven over to reduce the gap to just 4 points, and in the five minutes of time added on they pounded the try line but Esher hung on grimly to the end.

Blaydon had started the better but a missed tackle let in Esher fly-half Mickey Wilson near the posts and full-back Luke Daniels added the conversion. The home side then lost Kris Chesney to the sin-bin but Blaydon could only take advantage with an Andrew Baggett penalty for handling in a ruck and that was soon cancelled out with a similar effort from Daniels.

With the interval approaching Blaydon looked to have survived a long period in defence but the pressure eventually told and home centre Tom Cheeseman crashed over near the posts with Daniels making it 17-3 at the break.

The second period was quite a different story with Zach Kibirige showing once again what a tremendous prospect he is with a 3rd brace of tries in as many games. The young full-back fielded a long kick and broke from the 22 to release winger Tom Jeffery who beat his man and skated down the left to draw the home full-back and there was Kibirige in support to touch down.

His second try soon followed from umpteen phases of possession when he joined the three-quarters line and cut loose into the 22 only to be tackled a metre short. Showing great awareness however he held onto the ball and had the presence of mind to reach over the defenders and touch down over the line.

All the good work was sadly negated when a mistake let in Esher centre Andrew Wright who with a smart dummy was away in a flash and their lead had been extended.

Blaydon’s never say die approach could and maybe should have secured the points in the pulsating final quarter, and when lock-forward Wearmouth was driven over and Baggett on target with the extras it looked very likely.

Score correction from Boxing Day, it was Liam not Fraser who scored, hey not my fault, they are twins……

Both sides had lots of changes from the first fixture, with the Bricks side as has become tradition a mixture of past and present players with:

  • Texas guesting again for us, having been in the Bricks many years, but now playing at Winlaton
  • Dan Turland was still back from Uni
  • Harry made only his 4th start this season at 8 and was truly hurting by the time he left
  • Jimmy the Horse showed up for his 3rd game of the season and was really impressive in a sizable 2nd row partnership with Smiler making his first appearance this season after not playing this season, few days rest and sure he’ll be back.
  • Chris Coates made his second appearance of the season at fullback as part of his recovery from illness.
  • Andy Richardson and Lowsey made an impressive half back pair, young Andy making his debut and Lowsey not having played since our last cup match.
  • Dean Holiday played again n the centre and made numerous yards.
  • Richard Hails was still AWOL
  • Bum Bum made what could have been his 5th appearance, leave it with our record keeper Windy to count an left the pitch with a badly split lip and returned stitched to continue.
  • Liam and Frazer Wright made very impressive Bricks 2nd appearances, from our U18s side, 3 more games to be presented with the Bricks Polo shirts
  • Not available; Steve Kane and Fossie at work, Savs injured from Boxing Day, Big Lad & Stu Bailey baby sitting but on the side line (we need a crèche) Windy / Wardy resting after 2 games in 5 days, Gerry doing a family thing and Craig McBurnie watching with a bad back.

3. Joe Melia
4. Fraser Wright.    (Horse)
5. Smiler
6. Bum Bum
7. Liam Wright.
8. Harry

10. Lowsey
11. Dan Turland
12. Thacks                (Texas)
13. Dean Holiday
14  Joe Snowdon
15  Coatsey              (Matty Bell)

Highs and Lows:

  • Windy put us on the top pitch, it was muddy and wore both teams out and slowed down the game.
  • Bricks defence was immense again, with special mention to Liam, Frazer, Dan, Keith,  Dean, Lowsey and Harry’s tackling were all outstanding
  • Lowsey got hit late and took it up with his opposite number and was sin binned for complaining
  • Coatsey looked dangerous every time he got the ball at fullback, game plan was make the break and off load and not take any hits, as with every Brick he ignored me and took hit after hit.
  • Andy managed to trouble the young Ryton scrum half all game, we will certainly see both those young lads playing at higher levels.
  • Harry, Keith, Bum Bum, Smiler and Horse made great yards in the forwards and Dean, Joe  and  Dan in the backs.
  • Ryton were lacking a kicker for both line and goal, Bricks took every chance to line kick distance and took penalties when offered.
  • Liam and Fraser were all over the park again
  • Joe had another good game and troubled Ryton defence every time he got the ball
  • Paul Winter made a great speech at half time  about supporting your team mates and staying on the pitch, before being yellow carded
  • Bricks try was a cracker, right across the back line and Thacks passed it right to Dan to score in the corner
  • Bricks did a 50 yard drive down the middle of the pitch

Summary – too close run games with difference being Bricks taking their chances in both games, both games could have gone either way, but bragging rights this year going with the Bricks. Let’s hope this tradition continues, as it is great to see tradition Boxing Day local rugby continuing and the home and away fixtures give both clubs a good bar during the festive season.

Penalty;  Texas

Conv. Joe

An unexpected frost Christmas night resulted in the game moving from Crowtrees to Ryton. A good crowd was entertained by a very evenly matched game with an evenly matched forward exchange and a youthful Ryton back division against a more experienced Bricks back division.

The Bricks side was as has become tradition a mixture of past and present players with:

  • Steve Kane and Texas guesting for us having been in the Bricks many years, but now playing at Winlaton
  • Gerry made his 2nd appearance after rejoining us from Consett this season
  • Fossie made his traditional Xmas appearance
  • Dan Turland was back from Uni
  • Harry made only his 3rd start this season
  • Mark Ward made his first start
  • Richard Hails went AWOL
  • Liam and Frazer Wright made very impressive Bricks debuts from our U18s side

Highs and Lows:

  • Bricks defence was immense, with special mention to Liam, Frazer, Stu, Dan and Harry’s tackling was outstanding
  • Game started with a massive hit on Ryton 7 by Harry and off he went, hats off to him, he recovered to return later.
  • Harry throw an outrages dummy and Ryton took it
  • Joe had a great game and troubled Ryton defence every time he got the ball
  • Paul Winter took a great take from the restart
  • Paul and Keith Winter took Ryton Second row wearing 13s (and lots of 1st team gear) outrages dummy, but Harry clattered him
  • Next break by Ryton 13 saw him clattered by Stu and Harry
  • Dan dropped the ball going over the line
  • Big Lad got dumped
  • Stu’s tackling at the base of the scrum harassed
  • Steve Kane was all over the park when he came on for the second half

Liam and Frazer Wright made impressive debuts, hard to believe they are still U18s, they looked easily at home in senior rugby, they will have bright futures at Blaydon RFC.

Blaydon 51 – Tynedale 7

[match id=102]

The records show that derby games between these local rivals are generally close affairs but yesterdays clash at Crow Trees was most definitely not as Blaydon romped to the most emphatic of victories.

Tynedale did have their moment of glory, 45 seconds to be precise, when their kick-off ball was shipped back to Andrew Baggett who dropped it under pressure allowing Chris Harris to nip in and score. Gavin Beasley added the conversion and the home crowd must have wondered what else would befall them.

Nothing was the answer. Blaydon simply took control and went on to run in 7 tries of their own, dominating in the set-pieces and pouncing whenever Tynedale coughed up possession or fell off in the tackle.

Director of rugby Micky Ward declared himself to be well satisfied, saying afterwards “We owed them one from the start of the season when they beat us by 1 point” adding “We needed to get back on track after losing at Fylde last week, we did a little bit of everything, we drove a couple of line-outs and the backs got their hands on the ball and caused some havoc”.

Lively flanker Ben Morris got the ball rolling when he burst through a line-out to storm over in the corner and by the half hour Chris Wearmouth had crossed from a tap penalty move and Tom Banks went in following good work by Tom Jeffery.

In the dying seconds of the first period full-back Zach Kibirige stood off a scrum on the visitors 22 and when released casually brushed aside 2 half-hearted challenges to run in the bonus try. Five minutes after the break he was in again, after another fine Jeffery run had been squandered, and the score had advanced to 37-7.

Tynedale thereafter had a better share of the possession for a while but never seriously looked like breaking through and it was left to Blaydon to show them how.

Baggett, redeeming himself for the early error, ran in try No6 to add to his 2 penalties and 5 conversions, and Tom Penney brought proceedings to a close with a score in the corner after Simon Barber had ran the length of the field.

From the Touchline – Sat 21st December

Today we welcome near neighbours Tynedale for this the first match of the second round of fixtures. The clubs met way back in early September with our visitors gaining a narrow 25 – 24 victory. Since that day, they have been beset by injuries and have only two further wins both at home against Hull Ionians and Worthing.

However, in the past few weeks, their form has improved and with a little luck they could have beaten both Cinderford and Richmond in the last two matches. No doubt today they will hope form goes out of the window and they can put one over on us!

As we all know, from games in the past few years, the results are often close and the current record is that Tynedale have won twelve to Blaydon’s ten in the past thirteen seasons.

LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
FYLDE 9 – BLAYDON 5
TYNEDALE 24 – RICHMOND 32

The result last week saw the end of our ten match unbeaten run and ironically it was Fylde who ended our ten match unbeaten run last season when we lost over there 23 – 19. The record between Blaydon and Fylde shows that Fylde have only won three times out of thirteen fixtures but upon reflection, last week they just about deserved the victory although the journey over Shap (gail force winds and driving rain!) did help to disrupt normal patterns of play and no doubt we will be looking to get back to winning ways today.

Other league results last week saw leaders Doncaster see of challengers Coventry, second placed Rosslyn Park demolish Hull Ionians, surely confining them to relegation, easy wins for both Esher over fourth bottom Cinderford and narrow victories for Old Albanian, Loughborough Students and Wharfedale over Worthing, Henley and Blackheath all of which sees Doncaster out in front three points clear of Rosslyn Park with Esher in third followed by Wharfedale and Fylde. At the bottom are Hull Ionians with nine points, Tynedale with nineteen, Blackheath with twenty five and Cinderford with twenty six all of whom needing victories – but remember, there are still sixteen games to go after today.

Members may be pleased to know that after several months of protracted negotiations and planning applications, the club has been granted a one year temporary planning permission for a WEDNESDAY MID WEEK CAR BOOT SALE with a view to re-consideration for permanent approval following satisfactory operation this coming summer.

The Boot Sale will operate for twenty weeks a year between May and September on a Wednesday commencing at 9.30am until 2.00pm.

Today’s match is sponsored by CALL CONNECTION LIMITED and the club would like to thank Graeme Kalbraier for his continued support of Blaydon Rugby Football Club and also thanks to Howie Gillfillan for Ball Sponsorship.

Thanks also to Ian Coonie and AWS for their season’s MAN OF THE MATCH SPONSORSHIP.

The annual President’s Lunch takes place today and we hope that all the attendees enjoy the festivities. Amongst the attendees are former Captain Eddie Mullin (1956/1960) chauffered today by another former Captain Russ Teasdale (1965/67).

Finally, can we wish all players, supporters and spectators the compliments of the season.

Fylde 9 – Blaydon 5

All good things must come to an end and Blaydon’s 10 match unbeaten run floundered in the driving wind and rain on the Lancashire coast. Conditions were so bad that line-outs were a lottery throughout and neither side was able to make use of the end to end gale when it was behind them, almost the entire game being played out between the 22’s.

In the second period when it was Blaydon’s turn to have the so-called advantage they were just 4 points adrift and sensibly kept the ball in hand but still could make no progress and got no closer to scoring than an Andrew Baggett penalty that rebounded from the woodwork.

Fylde to their credit looked after the ball slightly better, took their penalty points when available and overall just about deserved to win.

Chris Johnson the home fly-half was on target with penalties in the 6th and 23rd minutes but Blaydon grabbed the only try of the game, not surprisingly in the circumstances by the efforts of the forwards They moved it rapidly through a number of hands for skipper Keith Laughlin to finish off in the corner but then disappointingly saw Baggett’s conversion attempt heading for the posts only to be dragged wide by the wind at the last moment.

Leading 6-5 at the break Fylde defended superbly to hold their advantage and went on to put the issue beyond doubt with another Jackson penalty.

Blaydon 45 – Worthing 14

Worthing were simply brushed aside on what was their first ever visit to Crow Trees, a rampant Blaydon side seemingly scoring at will with a bonus point in the bag after just 29 minutes. They did hit back briefly in an improved performance after the break but otherwise it was all too easy for Blaydon to extend an unbeaten run to ten games.

A trademark driving line-out score by Jason Smithson in the 3rd minute began the rout soon followed by good efforts from Tom Jeffery, Keith Laughlin and then Smithson again from another maul to make it 26 points without reply at the break.

Blaydon were badly disrupted by injuries in the second period but against the run of play ran in a 5th score by Sean Brown prior to the visitors finally making an impact. Sam Hewick went in from close range and within 3 minutes Alex Nielson had profited from a fortuitous bounce, Finlay Coxon-Smith converting both efforts.

But that was it for the Sussex side and Blaydon responded quickly with the forwards piling on the pressure in the 22 and hooker Fran Entressengle finishing off.to make it 40-14, and still they were not done.

In time added on Jeffery shot clear from defence to scoot down the touchline and create a 7th and final effort for Tom Banks, the scoring completed with 5 successful conversions by Andrew Baggett.
