It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Malcolm Davies, has passed away.

Malcolm represented Blaydon Rugby over a period of nearly 25years starting whilst at Blaydon GS aged 17 in 1953, finishing a long career in the early 70`s.

Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Mary and family including: Simon and Melissa at this time, RIP Malcolm, you will be greatly missed and long remembered by all who knew you!

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that Terry Spearman, passed away Monday afternoon.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news that one of the Blaydon Rugby Football Club family: Terry Spearman, passed away Monday afternoon with his family at his side, following a period of illness.

.

Terry’s represented Blaydon Rugby Club superbly in many way:

  • Terry played for Blaydon after leaving Blaydon Grammar School and after going to university and qualifying as a chemist, he took up employment in Kent in the late 50’s eventually moving back to the North East to work in Peterlee and eventually he returned to his roots when he became part of the Dixon & Spearman company and operated their business outlet in Whickham until his retirement.

  • He did re-commence playing for Blaydon having in the past already represented Durham County at Championship level.

  • As his family developed, he had the pleasure of captaining the 3rd team for a number of years and his two sons, Graeme and Kevin appeared in this side with him but were told not to call him Dad on the field!!

  • His career as a player stretched from the 1950’s to the 1970’s albeit with gaps due to his employment. Upon giving up playing Terry served on the General Committee of the rugby club and was a Club Trustee, all of the time watching his sons play at 1st Team level.

Our thoughts at this time are with his wife Rosemary and family including:  Kevin, Graeme, Pamela and Julie at this time, RIP Terry, you will be greatly missed and long remembered by all who knew you!

Honours even as Tynedale sneak the win in entertaining North East Derby

Tynedale just shaded the North East derby to give Captain Matty Outson a fitting send off at Tynedale Park after 13 years of playing first team for Tynedale.

Tynedale started the game a very quick pace and a good break by number 8 Blackburn and a quick recycle, the ball was fed out wide to the right wing where blind side wing forward Ben Bell was  unopposed to go over in the corner.

For next 10 minutes Tynedale continued to pile pressure on Blaydon and defence was stretched as result and within a minute they had both Centre Cooney and Scrum Half Clarkson sin binned for separate infringements at the breakdown.  So the following scrum left Tynedale with a 2 man advantage in the backs and Leslie kicked wide for right wing Todhunter to touch down. (10-0)

Only a few minutes later Blaydon kicked to clear their lines which was perhaps unwise given the disadvantage in the backs, this was easily exploited by full back Rob Parker who broke to the 22 and he fed Will Miller to score, this time converted by Leslie. (17-0)

Blaydon finally woke up and just as they got back to 15 players on the field and a penalty kick to the corner led to a line out and Blaydon crossed the white wash with a well-controlled catch and drive with Matty Winter touching down.

The Blaydon resurgence continued, a good kick return by Stephens and a break by Varley took the ball to the Tynedale line and the ball was passed out to Ashman to score. The conversion by Clarkson was good.

And again the red revival continued, a poor kick by Tynedale gave Blaydon a line out on the Tyne 22, Blaydon worked the ball quickly and after about 7 phases the ball found itself in Ashman’s hands and again he finished well to bring the scores level.

The second started off in complete contrast to the first, with both teams looking to play rugby but neither breaking into the oppositions 22. After about 15 minutes of the 2nd half Tynedale gained a bit of momentum but were held up over the line. Blaydon dropped out under the posts but 2 phases later Tynedale were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Leslie converted to take Tynedale back in front.

Blaydon’s response was fairly immediate, they kicked to the corner and from the line out Tynedale dragged the driving Maul down and referee ruled it was a penalty try for Blaydon as they were certain to score.

Tynedale controlled the next 10 minutes and after numerous phases attacking the Blaydon line they finally broke through with prop Angus White scoring wide out, which was well converted by Leslie. 27-24.

Blaydon pushed hard for score now I reply and had a line out 5 metres out but the throw was adjudged not straight and that turned out to the last play of the game.

Blaydon Sign off the Season at Crow Trees with a Very Entertaining 6 Try Victory!!

Playing good open rugby right from the kick off, Blaydon never at any point looked in danger of losing this match, despite a very early successful Chester penalty after just three minutes of play. From then on Blaydon kept the Chester defence busy with constant line breaks, particularly from their centres Alex Clark and James Cooney.

It was one of those breaks on 15 minutes which was made by Clark who broke away from inside the Blaydon half up to the Chester 22 line where he sent in an unmarked Cooney for the first points which John Clarkson converted .

Blaydon’s second try of the match came after 26 minutes of play and when Clark was only part held in a tackle and the ball was shipped to prop Philip Brantingham who powered over to score under the posts, although on this occasion the conversion was surprisingly missed.

On the half hour, a bout of poor tackling by Blaydon allowed Chester their first and only try of the game and the conversion kick by the prolific boot of Reeve from wide out was successful (12-10).

Chester were using the impressive kicking power of their number 10 as one of their main tactics but on 27 minutes one of his clearance kicks was fielded by Jonny Ashman who cleverly chipped over his opposite number, fielded the ball and passed to fly half Dan Marshall, who raced in to score under the posts and the successful conversion made it 19-10.

Just before the half time whistle sounded Chester’s fly half Reeve, kicked a huge penalty from just within his own half to make the score 19-13 at the break.

Chester lost their number 8 to the bin immediately after the restart and within minutes of this happening, young winger Tristan Sommersall took a clever switch from Ashman and he then broke a tackle to power over wide out for the fourth try and bonus point which John Clarkson successfully converted to make the score 26-13.

Chester then immediately replied with two penalties, one from close range and the other from yet another huge kick taken from within their own half making it taking the score to 26-19

Back came Blaydon, and a successful line out win near the Chester 20m line was followed by an impressive rolling maul all the way to the try line which Liam Wright dotted down, the successful, difficult conversion by Clarkson making the score 33-19.

5 minutes later and another powerful rolling maul took the ball to the Chester 22 and scrum half Clarkson made a break open and produced a clever pass back inside to Sommersall who darted in for his second try, the conversion being unsuccessful meant the final score was 38-19.

Blaydon signing off their last home game of the season at Crow Trees ground having won 4 of their last 5 home games bodes really well for next season.

Stourbridge out Pace Blaydon with Rundle Running Riot!!!

Stourbridge opened the scoring on 3 minutes when a break blind from inside their own half released winger Dan Rundle who stepped Blaydon full back to score.
Pleasingly for the home support Blaydon’s response was fairly immediate and a kick to the corner led to a 5 metre line out, which created a catch and drive opportunity that was well controlled by Danny Gray at the back of the maul and he went over to score.
Just 4 minutes later Stourbridge ran it from their own 22 and centre Feyi-Waboso alluded opposite number Alex Clark and then full back Jack Appleton to score an excellent solo try.
The frequent scoring continued thanks to a great break by John Clarkson who was well supported by Daz Fearn and then Will Varley was on hand to score under the posts.

There was 20 minute lull in the try scoring but some good enterprising rugby being played by both sides without impacting on the score. Then on the stroke of half time Blaydon ran the ball from half way and excellent hands from forwards Varley and Gray released Sommersall and he handed off two defenders to score in the corner. This was well converted by Clarkson to take Blaydon into half time ahead 19-14.
The 2nd half started just like the first with both side playing expansive rugby but a poor kick from Blaydon was the creator of the first try, and the ball again found its way to Dan Rundle who was in space and again he finished with ease.
Frustratingly for the home side virtually straight from the kick off Stourbridge found space out wide again, this time Dan Rundle broke down the left wing but generously fed back inside to centre Heatley to score.
The left wing was now the source of all Stourbridge’s efforts and just a few minutes later the ball again reached Dan Rundle again in space and he finished off well again. Blaydon 19 v Stourbridge 29
Blaydon finally fronted up in the 2nd half having been spectators for the first 15 minutes but after 15 minutes of sustained pressure in the Stourbridge half they failed to produce a score.
Then on 69 minutes Stourbridge again found space on the left and the impressive centre Feyi-Waboso broke the Blaydon line again and fed in Rundle for his 4th try of the try of the game, which turned out to be the games last.
Stourbridge deserving victors after an excellent 2nd half performance especially by Feyi-Waboso and Rundle.

Blaydon Make It 3 Wins in a Row at Crow Trees!!

Blaydon started brightly and on 3 minutes, a good break from Alex Charlton from inside his own half was held up on the Hull 22 but the ball was fed out to Ewan Stephens who somehow ghosted through the Ionians defensive line to score under the posts, which enabled an easy conversion for Clarkson.
For the next 10 minutes it was honours even but Blaydon found themselves in the Hull 22 and a great running line by back row Paddy Cooper saw him nearly over the line but when held up just short of the line, John Clarkson was on hand to score.
Just 2 minutes later a great break by Nathan Bailey after taking a high ball inside his own half took the game to Ionians 22 where he passed to Marshall who put in Scrum half Clarkson for his 2nd try in 2 minutes.
Then after another few minutes Blaydon scored again, this time it was a quick tap penalty on the Hull 22 by Clarkson who put Winger Jonny Ashman in for Blaydon’s bonus point score (24-0).
The next 10 minutes were more of the same but without the finishing touch but on 30 minutes Blaydon opted for a 5 metre scrum from a penalty and 2 phases later Clarkson dived over to complete an excellent first half hattrick.
Blaydon continued to play expansive rugby but on 36 minutes Hull profited from a Blaydon mistake on their own 22, and shortly after the error Hull kicked a penalty to the corner and from the subsequent line out 5 metres out, Ionians hooker Stephenson was the conductor at the back of Hull’s maul from the catch and drive and he rumbled over for their first try, which was well converted by Minikin.
Just a few minutes later Hull scored again, this try was a mirror image of the first so this time an attacking line out on Blaydon’s right wing and Stephenson was again the man with the ball in his hands as the maul trundled over the line.

The first 20 minutes of the 2nd half were scrappy in comparison to the first with Hull enjoying a territorial advantage and spending a lot of time in the Blaydon half, although Blaydon to their credit defended admirably. Eventually on the 62nd minute when yet another catch and drive led to Stephenson’s Hattrick.
Blaydon’s response to this try was excellent and shortly afterwards it was Blaydon’s turn to kick to the corner and from the resulting line out Blaydon went over the try number 6. This time it was 2nd row Austin Phillips who went over to take the score to 36-19.
Hull responded 7 minutes later with a breakthrough the centre of Blaydon’s back line by Britton who put Minikin in to score.
Happily for the hosts that was the final score of the game, finishing 36-26, Blaydon completing a third home win in a row.

Hard Day for Our Red Boys on the Road

Fylde v Blaydon 5th March 2022

After completing back to back victories in the past two weeks, Blaydon travelled full of confidence for their away fixture at The Woodlands only to be met by a home side, the league’s leading scorers, in superb form.

Overall, Fylde ran in 11 tries in a superb all round display with their backs and forwards combining well and entertaining the home crowd of near 1,000.

The early few minutes of the game saw Blaydon in constant possession but immediately they dropped the ball, it was quickly transferred to their former winger Tom Grimes who ran in from half way for their first try and a bazaar next 7 minutes saw Blaydon leak 3 more tries and the home side secured the bonus point by the 16th minute.

However, Blaydon were not to be outdone and did play their part when hooker Owen Chaplin finished off in the corner to reduce the arrears.   During scoring Chaplin received a leg injury, leaving the field and taking no further part in the encounter.   Immediately Fylde retaliated and added 2 further tries before half time but Blaydon were not to be denied and Ethan Clark touched down twice to reduce the arrears and put Blaydon in touch of their bonus point.

Immediately after the interval with the injured Jack Appleton having been replaced by Falcon flyer Iwan Stephens, soon saw that vital score when the same player ran in from 20 yards.  Midway through the half he added to the score with a further touchdown and Blaydon had then, with conversions by John Clarkson, reached 31 points.   Unfortunately the home side also scored at regular intervals and finished up totalling 79 points.

A heavy defeat but a travelling bonus point which puts us 6 points above basement club Harrogate and seemingly slowly we are avoiding last place.

Blaydon Tame the Tigers for 2nd Win in a Row!!!

Playing good, flowing rugby, Blaydon were much the better side for most of the first half with superiority in both backs and forwards. The first try came in the 13th minute when Blaydon were awarded a penalty which they kicked into touch on the visitors 5 m line. The ball was won and was worked between backs and forwards until hooker Chaplin went over near the posts and the conversion was successful.

Blaydon were now attacking Sheffield’s line continually and in the 20th minute Ethan Clark scored Blaydon’s second try from an attack once again set up from a penalty kick into touch on Sheffield’s 5 m line, the conversion again being successful; and it only took a further 5 minutes before Liam Wright crashed over for Blaydon’s third converted try.

Against the run of play, and in the last minute of the first half, Sheffield’s backs made a break from within their own half and scored under the posts to set up an easy conversion.  HT 21-7.

The second half was a much more even contest; with Sheffield upping their attacking game and within minutes of the restart they again scored from within their own half after an intercepted pass was followed by a long run in to give another easy conversion from in front of the sticks.

As player replacements and unfortunate injuries slowed the pace of the game down and just as the second half entered the 47th minute, Sheffield lost the ball in a tackle near to their try line which prop forward Phil Brantingham seized upon to crash over for the 4th try and a bonus point win

Blaydon Complete the Double Over Bourneville

Blaydon started the brighter in the early exchanges and on 7 minutes nearly scored from a 5m scrum when Ethan Clarke went over from a scrum but was brilliantly held up by scrum half Harrhy.

On 14 minutes from another 5 metre scrum on the Bourneville line the ball went out to Blaydon backs and James Cooney went over under the posts. The try was well converted by Scrum Half John Clarkson

Just five minutes later Blaydon were back in the Bourneville 22 and again from 1st phase ball the backs scored, this time Alex Clark the scorer again under the posts

Blaydon were growing in confidence and ran the ball from a scrum in their own half, the ball was quickly recycled and Ethan Hall-Lyon released Jonny Ashman down the right wing and over the line to take the score to 21-0.

Only a few minutes later Jack Appleton made another break this time down the left wing and fed John Clarkson to score Blaydon’s 4th and bonus point try with only 23 minutes gone.

Bourneville finally got off the bus and thanks to a few Blaydon offsides found themselves in the Blaydon 22 but this time it was Blaydon’s defence that impressed forcing the knock on and Blaydon cleared the lines.

The next 15 minutes was all Blaydon but they didn’t score and just before half time a loose pass by Cooney was intercepted by Bourneville right wing Tom Burrows who ran in under the posts.

From the kick off Blaydon pressured well and won a penalty In front of the posts which Clarkson kicked to take the half time score to Blaydon 29 v Bourneville 7.

The second half started nothing like the first with both teams showing a lot of intent but mistakes and good defence causing the first 20 minutes to drift by with no change to the scoreboard.

Then a perfect cross kick from Marshall was well taken by Appleton who’s shrugged off 3 or 4 defenders to finish an excellent individual try which was ably converted again by Clarkson taking the score to 36 – 7

That score was followed Another 17 minutes of good endeavour from both sides again but all the hard work came to nothing, Blaydon probably looking the most likely to score with a few kicks just bouncing the wrong way.

The deadlock was finally broken with Blaydon on the attack but a wild long pass by Clarkson was intercepted by winger Michael Ho for Bourneville’s 2nd try frustratingly both gifted by Blaydon and converted Mitchell McGahan
