Saturday 13th April Blaydon Bricks 8, Ryton 25

The game after the week before ……….

Bricks seemed to be struggling with a Cup Final hangover, we knew Rytion would be bridging a strong side as they had canned their 2nd team game to make sure they had a full squd to play us.

The game was very close at 8 all and then the Bricks self distructed, we started back chatting the ref. we give penalty after penalty away, and Tonsey went to the sin bin for a stupid lash out, which was no more than a slap, but it was a contact on the face with his hand.

The ref was guesting in the area from Dubai and just blew his whistle permanently proving he knew the rules and stopping any momentum which played to the hands of the big forwards from Ryton, stopping our expansive game and allowing them to rest.

Rest of the match report is coming from Davy Hall, as long as he does not delete it this week….

Davy Hall report: After last weeks cup glory it was back down to earth with Ryton the visitors for a league double header.

The game started slowly with The Bricks pinned in their own half in the early stages and fortunate not to concede an early try after Strachs attempted clearance resulted in the Ryton centre crossing the line, only to be disallowed for a forward pass.
Soon after Ryton were awarded a penalty just outside the 22 which was easily converted to score the first points of the game 0-3.
The game began to even out and it was Blaydons turn to dominate. Good forward play almost resulted in a try with Strachs knocking on just short of the line when a try looked certain.
It looked like a matter of time before Blaydons first try as Ryton struggled to get out of their 22 and Nat was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet after great play from Phil and Stu, only the final pass going astray.
Within minutes and against the run of play Ryton touched down in the corner for the first try of the game, missing the conversion from wide to make the score 0-8.
Before half time Blaydon were awarded a penalty just inside the Ryton 22 which was easily converted by Philly to make the score 3-8 at the break.
The second half started with 4 replacements as Goggle, Joe, Brett and FBL Jr (Chris Morton) came on.
It was not long till the scores were level as Joe scored a sublime try. After a strong run through the middle by Thacks the ball was quickly recycled and found Joe in a tight spot on the wing who jinked to give himself a yard and chipped the ball into the corner. He chased through and just touched down score the dead ball line to make the score 8-8.
The scores weren’t level for long with Ryton crossing once again to take the lead 8-13.
A poor refereeing decision to sin bin Graeme Tones after an accidental clash was met with a death or glory decision from management as Grumpy was sent on to bulk up the depleted pack. For the next scrum the Ryton number 8 picked up and passed on to the scrum half for a simple try, with the conversion extending the lead to 8-20.
With the bricks down to 14 men Ryton took control and extended the lead further with another unconverted try to make the final score 8-25.
A deserved win for Ryton in a close evenly matched game where they took their chances and Blaydon didn’t.
Other points of Note:
* Nat (2 stone) felling Oxo (45 stone) and defying the laws of physics
* Keith Winter didn’t knock on
* The referees explanation to Tonesy as to why he was sin binned “The only reason it’s a yellow and not a red is because I could see it was an accident”. Tonesy responding that he had been hit harder by his mother and I believe him, I’ve seen her…..
* My first opportunity to communicate with Liam Bradley, unforgettable, what type of life form is he?
Keith Winters Stag Do in Workington next weekend for anyone who hasn’t already done so let Bruce know if/when you’re going.
Davy.
