Darlington Mowden Park 23 – Blaydon 24

With just 10 minutes remaining Darlington looked set to start their life in National League One with a win over local rivals only to have victory snatched from their grasp by Chris Wearmouth the Blaydon lock-forward who stormed over for two late tries.

In an incident packed game the home side had both Rob Conquest and Henry Robinson yellow carded whilst the visitors were reduced to 14 men from the 45th minute when prop forward and director of rugby Micky Ward was sent off for violent conduct.

Rhodri Adamson opened the scoring for Blaydon with a 15th minute penalty but that was wiped out by Garry Law, Darlington’s man of the match, who kept Blaydon on the back foot throughout with some towering kicks and went on to land a personal tally of 13 points.
On 35 minutes the Blaydon forwards applied pressure in the 22 with Harry Bate twice making telling breaks before they moved it along the line for centre Tom Bramwell to finish off with Adamson converting, but right on the interval another Law penalty made it 6-10 at the break.

In the early minutes of the second period Blaydon were at sixes and sevens following the Ward dismissal and had no answer when home No8 Ollie Hodgson broke blind from a scrum to touch down. Law converted that effort and then kicked a 3rd penalty before Blaydon got themselves into a tangle behind their own posts and conceded a scrum from which Hodgson scored once more.

Law’s final contribution with the conversion took it to 23-10 but with victory in sight it all went wrong for them.

When Darlington illegally stopped a try being scored Blaydon kicked the penalty to touch and from a catch and drive Wearmouth went over. the Craig Willis conversion reducing the gap to 6 points, and in the final play of the game Blaydon produced an identical scenario with the Wearmouth/Willis combination securing a dramatic finale.

Ayr 32 – Blaydon 12 Pre Season Friendly

Despite several late changes in the travelling squad Blaydon were well in control in the first period after absorbing early home pressure which resulted in an easy three points from in front of the posts, After both Tom Jeffery and Frazer Wilson had gone close the visitors went into the lead following a simple 9 to 14 move which saw the former touch down in the corner for an unconverted try on the half hour.

Forward momentum kept Blaydon in the home 22 and a neat Rhoderie Adamson break allowed Andrew Archibold to go over between the posts for the scrum half to add the extras.

Injuries then upset the Blaydon continuity and three mistakes presented the home team with three tries in eight minutes. A Blaydon revival saw a spell of pressure and a five metre lineout, strangely moved five metres back by the 14 year old touch judge after a word from a helpful Ayr player. It must be pionted out that no touch judges were appointed and each side were asked to do the duty. Consequently the referee had a difficult task and offsides were at a premium.

With time running out two late tries widened the margin and gave the home team a somewhat flattering scoreline.

Blaydon 38, Currie RFC 14 – Pre-Season friendly

Blaydon produce a scintillating display to account for Scottish Premier League opposition, in the first of 3 pre-season games, outscoring their opponents 6 tries to 2 and in the process used 30 players which bodes well for the season.

In particular in the second period they dominated all phases of the game and ran out comfortable winners.

Meanwhile the Geogians travel to Bishop Aucklane next week and then play away to West Hartlepool in the County Cup.

Blaydon squad update for 2014/15 Season

Retention over recruitment has been the Blaydon motto in the off-season and we’ve done a good job of achieving our goals. We only lost two of our players from last season so we feel like it has been a successful off-season. Andy Davies has left to join Newcastle Falcons Full time and Tommy Banks returned home to work, both these guys were massive for us last season however we’ve lined up some pretty handy replacements.

Even though we only lost two players, we were keen to get a little bit more quality in behind the scrum to add to the talent we already have. Two players who impressed last season after a short training spell were Joe Heslop and Ollie Wood. Ollie is a hard-hitting centre that is in the area studying business at Northumbria University, he played for Scunthorpe last season and impressed when he came to train with us. Joe on the other hand is a very illusive outside back that grew up in Barnard castle, he studied at Manchester University and is now working in the area as a nuclear physicist, Both players will bring a good edge to our squad.

The club will have a close working relationship with both Newcastle and Northumbria University, we currently have three players who will balance their university and Club commitments. We have two forwards from Northumbria who will add great value to our pack Victor Guignouard a French hooker, Jack Davison who plays in the back row and then at scrum half we have Rhodri Adamson from Newcastle University, Rhodri went on the England counties tour in the summer and will no doubt flourish under the guidance of ex falcons scrum half Hall Charlton.

Other additions to the squad include young open side Matthew Jenkinson and talented scrum half Nathan horsfall.

Our squad is pretty much finalised for the new season now the hard work of pre-season starts.

England Counties trio commit their future to Blaydon RFC

imageimageimageBlaydon are extremely pleased to announce three of their senior forwards have committed their future to the club for another season.

Matthew Hall, Gavin Jones and Chris Wearmouth have all agreed to stay at the club for another season. All three had a lot of interest from other clubs; however they showed their loyalty by committing to us.

Matthew has played over 250 games for Blaydon and captained England counties on numerous occasions; he is a good ball carrier and a great scrummaging hooker.

Gav brings a wealth of experience in the national leagues he also represented England Counties and is a Yorkshire regular.

Chris on the other hand was player of the season this year and the corner stone of the pack.

The club is so lucky to have retained 90% of its players from last season, we have a number of guys coming in to strengthen the current squad and we’ll announce these in due courseblaydon
