Coventry 34 – Blaydon 15

Coventry’s 13 match winning run since losing at Blaydon in September was comfortably extended with a tremendous second half performance that gave the visitors little chance of ‘doing the double’.

A crowd of 1938, the best of the season at the Butts Park Arena, were stunned into silence however in the 1st minute when the Blaydon forwards with some excellent inter-passing stormed into the home 22 for Chris Wearmouth to touch down for a sensational try.

Coventry recovered well and soon hit back for wingers Will Hurrell and Dom Lespierre to combine in a smart move finished off by the latter and converted by fly-half Matt Jones.
Lespierre and Jones struck again on 26 minutes but by the interval Blaydon had regained the lead. A barnstorming run by Tom Bramwell saw the centre go clear but unluckily crash into an upright when touching down. Andrew Baggett landed the conversion and in the final minute of the half added a penalty to make it 14-15 to the visitors.

The Blaydon defence showed great resilience in the 2nd period but promotion seeking Coventry had much the better of the exchanges and with 2 more tries went on to clinch victory.

Hurrell, who was a constant threat, made the initial break for a fine effort by man of the match Sam Pailor, the flanker then adding a second with a powerful burst from 25 metres.

Jones converted both efforts and was also on target with a brace penalties to take his personal tally to 14 points.

Blaydon 5 – Ealing Trailfinders 31

The Ealing juggernaut stormed into the new year with another comfortable 5 pointer and in the second half in particular appeared to score at will. Their pacey backs repeatedly broke tackles to put the home defence in retreat with centre Andrew Reay a constant threat with his sniping runs.

Up front it was a different story however as the Blaydon pack were more than a match for their counterparts and had good claims for a penalty try early on when Ealing twice pulled down a 5 metre scrum and incurred a yellow card.

Reay it was who scored the opener when completing a flowing move, and by the interval flanker Arthur Ellis had danced through for number two.

On 55 minutes Reay was in again but this time Blaydon quickly responded through Gavin Jones from a rolling maul. Just as quickly however Ealing were back down the other end for replacement Luke Daniels to score the bonus try.

Blaydon rallied again and twice put kickable penalties to the corner only to lose the line-out, and fittingly the visitors had the last word.

Another lightning raid from their own half was completed in style by Sam Wardingley, who had provided the pass for both the Reay efforts, and fly-half Ben Ward put over his third conversion.

Tynedale 17 – Blaydon 27

There was little festive cheer for Tynedale in this derby clash, going down by 4 tries to 2 and rarely looking capable of avoiding a 6th consecutive defeat. For Blaydon it was sweet revenge for an early season reversal in the home fixture and a 5 point win to end their own rocky spell.
A crowd in excess of 500 saw the visitors use their wind advantage to run-up a 15-3 lead in the first half and then add two more tries into the elements to virtually seal the result early in the second period.

After 10 minutes of probing by both sides Blaydon No8 Gavin Jones stormed into the 22 to break the deadlock. Rhodri Adamson was put clear only to be pulled down inches short but possession was regained and centre Toby Bain crossed in the corner.

On 18 minutes Adamson was again the initiator, Tom Bramwell taking it on to send in Tom Jeffery for a second score. This time Andrew Baggett landed the conversion followed by a penalty success for both he and Tynedale full-back Brett Connon but by the interval Blaydon were down to 14, Tom Grimes being yellow-carded for a deliberate knock-on.

Despite the advantage in numbers and wind Tynedale fell further behind soon after the restart when Blaydon moved it quickly through the hands for Baggett to put Jeffrey clear for the wingers 2nd try.

Worse was to follow when their replacement forward Adam King followed Grimes into the bin and Blaydon ran in a 4th try. Baggett was again involved, moving it on to Chris Wearmouth, the big lock storming over with a couple of defenders hanging on.

The Baggett conversion ended the Blaydon scoring and director of rugby Micky Ward declared himself to be ‘chuffed to bits’, saying “We needed to get a win before Christmas” adding ” The really pleasing thing for me was that some of the tries we scored weren’t just through the forwards, we were throwing the ball around and threatening from all positions”.

Tynedale however almost had the last word, scoring 2 tries to greatly reduce the deficit. At three rolling mauls in quick succession they had Blaydon in full retreat, one of them resulting in a penalty try and another sin-binning for the visitors.

Ironically for Blaydon when they finally broke free of the pounding and gained 30 metres from their own drive they were robbed of the ball (not for the first time) and Tynedale raced clear to record a fine effort though flanker Matthews Charters.

A philosophical chairman of rugby John Shotton said afterwards “We battled on but overall I thought we were poor today, our confidence is down and Blaydon deserved to win”.

Blaydon 20 – Hartpury College 25

Blaydon were never too far away on the scoreboard but equally never looked like coming out on top against a side that ran it from all parts of the field and whose backs were a constant threat.

Many a Blaydon clearance was run straight back at them, and some indifferent tackling led to 2 of the Hartpury tries.

Director of rugby Micky Ward agreed that the better team had won, saying “It would have been a bit of a disservice if we had won”, adding “our defence in the first half was unacceptable”.
The visitors led from the 9th minute onwards, taking the lead with a lightning break down the right to set up a score for full-back Ruardhi McConnochie who stormed over.

A tried and trusted penalty to the corner and rolling maul move brought a response from No8 Gavin Jones but the visitors were never far away. Their centre Steven Leonard easily avoided three poor tackles and strolled in for try number 2, again converted by Mitchell Burton.
Blaydon responded once more when Phil Stewart burst into the 22 to put skipper Keith Laughlin over but right on the interval Leonard was in for his second with a devastating diagonal break.

Trailing 10-19 Blaydon tightened up in the second period and were soon back in contention through Robbie Kalbraier from another catch and drive, Andrew Baggett converting.
Significantly however the visitors gave them a taste of their own medicine, pushing them off their own scrum ball near the line. A Burton penalty resulted and Blaydon were down to 13 men for a 10 minute spell due to a yellow card and a shortage of fit props.

Baggett got it back to a 2 point deficit with a penalty but Burton was similarly on target to clinch a deserved victory for the college boys.

Esher 42 – Blaydon 12

The teams were separated by just 2 points and 1 league position at the start but on the day Esher made far better use of their possession and capitalised on all their opportunities to run out comfortable winners.

For 20 minutes Blaydon retained a clean sheet but Esher full-back Ali Chisholm made the breakthrough when he joined a flowing movement to score near the flag.  The same player then added a second try after Blaydon had dropped the ball in mid-field, and scrum-half Rob Shaw darted through a line-out gap to make it 21-0, Ian Croft having converted all 3 efforts.

It took until the final minute of the half for Blaydon to breech the home 22 but good use was made of their line-out ball and No8 Gavin Jones was driven over.

Esher pulled further ahead 5 minutes into the second period when lock-forward Ollie Mines touched down from a catch and drive and soon after winger Spencer Sutherland beat 3 men in a dazzling run, with 2 more Croft conversions.

Now 35-5 in arrears Blaydon had their best spell of pressure and after Tom Bramwell had been involved 3 times in the build-up Esher infringed at a series of short scrums, a penalty try was awarded and Andrew Baggett landed the conversion.

Fittingly it was Esher, who generally had the better of the exchanges, that completed their day with a 6th try by replacement Ollie Richards from yet another flowing movement.
